Beach House, Space Song - best enjoyed when it's late, you're a bit drunk and feeling a little broken-hearted. . .

play it loud and try to tell Del it's not jazz! I guess this is where I make a fool of myself, not being a musician nor understanding the technicalities of musical structures, but on my first listening to The Wizard (rather pleased with myself as Black Sabbath is not my music of choice). I would say that it is strongly influenced by Blues, but of course Jazz quickly evolved from Blues, so there is a connect there. Also, the method of one or two instruments sticking to the tune whilst others fly off and play, is of course credited to Jazz, along with instruments replacing vocals as pioneered by Miles Davis in Kind of Blue - "So What" One could equally say that because Black Sabbath uses a Drum Kit (an innovation from Jazz bands) that it is Jazz, that would be silly. So I would still think it's more Blues than Jazz but certainly contains Jazz influences. Having said that I do often struggle with particularly females Jazz singers as to whether a piece is Jazz or Blues, particularly singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald or Amy Winehouse all of whom are classified as Jazz, but if I didn't know better would say were Blues. Ok Strange Fruit is a poor example, clearly Jazz, but a frigging awesome awesome track :-) Probably Billie's best Album was called "The Lady sings the Blues" and yet is credited to Jazz. So many connections I guess. With music, I guess, it's a bit like a bible, you can take from it what you want :-) Sorry Del on balance, just listening to it, I say BLUES not Jazz :-(
