BTW, it's OK to show disgust with how the Republicans in America are abusing power and people. Apparently, if you don't have a problem, create one.
I'm hoping your government does better, seeing that the Russian government tampered with your Brexit vote. Here's hoping you get to vote again better prepared against a meddling foreign agent.
If only the drafters of the American constitution had better prepared the USA not only of a compromised President or party, but both. We are not waiting for a constitutional crisis, we are deep in one right now.

Interesting you bring up Russian interference on Brexit when, as SC points out, it is being whitewashed over here and one labour MP has been trying to get the subject raised 8n parliament since the referendum but to no avail. I think it is because so many of influence know they will make sackloads of money from brexit (at our expense) coupled with the allegation that, if you support aeurope you are somewhat less patriotic (sure that rings true in the US as well).

It's just insane. Nationalism of any sort has only been good for the very worst of humanity. It's never been good for all of humanity. Certainly not for anyone with an ounce of compassion.

My view of patriotism was influenced by watching the recent Ken Burns documentary series on the Vietnam war. In the early years of the war, it was very much promoted that it was patriotic to support the war effort and condemn the dissenting voices. But as the war progressed and circumstances changed, the blind ‘patriotic’ support for the war lessened.
One of the objectors was interviewed and said that, although he was constantly being called an unpatriotic American, he always felt that he was the more patriotic - because he was speaking up for American values, to question the legality of their involvement, the hidden agenda conducting the war, the actions of its allies in South Vietnam and most importantly the obscene way some aspects of the war was being conducted by US troops.

There is a clear distinction between Nationalism and Patriotism. Nationalism being a relatively recent concept, whereby one identifies oneself by concepts such as "Language, Religion, values, geographical location" and you set your group apart from others, indeed it is such a new concept for example that it was as late as the 1860's before Ya'qoub Sanu following his studies in Italy, fell under the spell of nationalism and the theatre and introduced both concepts to the colloquial Egyptian Arabic. I'm only giving that as an example as Nationalism is a reasonably new and imagined state of mind, much like holding a Passport is a new concept and only came about in the WWI, prior to that people could wander the world free, and yet now that seems such an alien concept and yet it was within our Grandparents lifetimes that that was the way it had always been. To them it would seem like we are all in massive prisons where our leaders say "You cannot walk over that river, or across that field, or that mountain, you must live in the valley between, and no other people will visit you or you visit them." It is terrifying how quickly that has become the norm. Nationalism can be used for good, pulling people together to work for one aim, or supporting an industry etc. but as ZR says, invariably it is negative, it by it's nature creates an "us and them" mentality and fear of the outside. Patriotism, however, I believe is different it is closer attached to the very strong emotion go Love, and giving to protect neighbours, family and land, as you quite rightly say Mikey, harder to define and different to each person.

It is terrifying how quickly that has become the norm. Pre passports, papers for safe conduct were provided (I beleive), passports we are led to believe, replaced the safe conduct papers to allow entry to other countries. When travelling abroad, I feel so privileged to have a passport and can visit these countries and meet people who could never imagine the same freedom to travel. after saying all that, I wonder what the real reason for a passport is. Is it to be able to travel and enter other countries? Or is it to be able to return home?

Went to one of the more local rallies today. It was a good group, but not as many as should show up. No counter protesters, they only show up where the bigger media outlets will be.
The relatively small crowd shows that many people don't realize just how serious what is happening in the world right now is.

No worries, kept an eye out. Met some nice people. www.theherald-news.com/2018/06/29/hundreds-in-joliet-protest-separating-immigrant-families/axvidq6/BTW, if by several marches/rallies they meant somewhere around 650, I guess that's several. Many of my pics are time and date stamped wrong, Forgot to check that it was correct in my camera, not sure why it keeps changing to the wrong date, but what does one do? Attachments:

What a disaster the World Cup has been for the Russian hating media and those of a similar disposition. Makes you wonder how else Russia is misrepresented in the Western media, doesn't it? Nevertheless I guess it is possible that Putin has personally frogmarched all of the spectators to each stadium with the threat of a Novichok attack against those failing to comply..

Excellent ZR, so much respect for you. It is so important right now that people stand up and do something to solve the worlds problems, and solve them in a way that is right for them. In a strangely selfish way doing something to help change is so much better for the soul. Stay strong keep fighting for what is right! 👍
