Yesterday I left a dune Her name is Iledeman I am with my cow and her calf The calf is small and cannot walk very well Rain has fallen and there is water everywhere I ask my family and friends to help me return to my house But they just refuse
But they just refuse
I am alone in the forest I am really frightened There are huge monkeys and they look at me with bad faces like lost dogs They make me feel frightened My Camel is sinking in the mud I hit it with my stick I want to go home I want to go home with my cow and her little calf

She ran away from home on her mother's best coat She was married before she was even entitled to vote And her husband was one of those blokes The sort that only laughs at his own jokes The sort a war takes away And when there wasn't a war he left anyway
Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong Are here to make everything right that's wrong Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too Are here to make it all okay with you
One dark night he came home from the sea And put a hole in her body where no hole should be It hurt her more to see him walking out the door And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the floor
along with Between The Wars makes for some of Braggs finest.

The Vintage Caravan - Cocaine Sally (written about a friend of the band)
The cold winter winds blow While Sally sells her body in the night Her life she is ruining She doesn't care if it isn't right
Hoping this is all a bad dream Hoping nothing is as it seems Doesn't have a place to call home In this world she is all alone
Cocaine Sally Wanders the streets alone Cocaine Sally Doesn't have a home Aaaah aaah aaaah aaah
One night she had one too much
All alone in the streets That night she had a strangers touch So cold, cold, cold, So damn cold She couldn't feel her feet She went right back to sleep The lost soul never Came back
Cocaine Sally Wanders the streets alone Cocaine Sally Doesn't have a home Aaaah aaah aaaah aaah

Leonard Cohen - so many wonderful song-poems, and it seems almost like vandalism to pick them apart, but these lines from The Night Comes On have been running through my head for years -
"I went down to the place where I knew she lay waiting Under the marble and the snow I said, Mother I'm frightened, the thunder and the lightning I'll never come through this alone She said, I'll be with you, my shawl wrapped around you My hand on your head when you go"
and -
"My son and my daughter Climbed out of the water Crying, papa, you promised to play And they lead me away To the great surprise It's papa, don't peek, papa, cover your eyes And they hide, they hide in the world" and finally - "here's to the few Who forgive what you do And the fewer who don't even care"
