Hard to second guess the effect of changes in the arena; really don't mind, as long as there are no sound bleeds! Nice to have a new layout to wander round and feel it all fresh again. Really like the getting rid of the wristband checks between the arboretum and the arena - good move!!! Having the teen tent by Mollys and the festival camping close too is also a good move, in my view. The more I look at the map, the more I like it. I thought the pub was going to be called The Sledge and Hammer? Looks like it is The Golden Lion, on the map. I hope there are more water points than indicated... All in all, liking the look, though not sure how it will go down with people who'll need to lug their stuff further ..

I'm wondering whether the arboretum will now stay closed until 2pm. We may ned to change our meeting point to Gate "B", for those of us looking forward to exploring together

Hmm... I hope they just forgot to mark the water points on the arena & arboretum part of the map... Not wholly convinced that's a good place for Open Air in the middle of a thoroughfare but we'll see if it works soon enough

not sure how it will go down with people who'll need to lug their stuff further .. Looks fine to me but then I'm parking and camping this year. I just hope that there are clear signposts for 'family camping' and 'festival camping'. Those large groups of kids surrounded by rubbish make me so cross.

I agree, Purpledawn, though expect there'll be a lot of people who will return to their Womad pitch, the one they look forward to returning to every year, whatever the designation is

Train stops? Looks interesting but not sure about position of main stage - could get very congested?

Do not like change on first sight, but more I look at the new arena layout it looks like changes for the good. Hope the main stage is not going to get too congested, however it does look like the Charlie gilet stage is in a better position and not in front of the main thoroughfare. So long as the noise from the fair ground does not pollute the two main open air stages, I am happy ☺️

I've never liked the main stage in the corner of the arena, so making it more central seems good. . . but will the whole thing work? Only one way to find out. . .

Apart from that the new layout looks good.

The arboretum won't necessary be closed until the rest of the arena opens (only usually 2pm on Thursday - open from 10am onwards the rest of the days!). The routes between the arboretum and the main arena will still be bottlenecks and will still be crossing the road, so it will still be possible to isolate the arboretum before and after hours if that's how they want to play it.
And as for the Open Air being a thoroughfare, they had the same set up of Siam, Open Air and Charlie Gillett Stage (then the Saddlespan..or Village Stage?) all in one line in 2007, the year of the mud. I don't recall there being thoroughfare issues then, although by Saturday that was probably the least of our worries.

Going by what was said on Facebook, the arboretum will become integral to the arena area and therefore out of bounds before 2pm Thursday and 10am other days. This will be a concern to traders in the arboretum who rely on breakfasts and early morning well being trade, sure they will not be happy if this affects their sales. Also not sure whether first aid etc are in the arena or not, I guess not. Molly's bar pretty sure is in the arena but does that matter? It does look like there will not be any eating facilities before 10am
Extending the arena will be seen as a big mistake I am sure. What will be annoying is, if you do want to have access to arboretum etc, sign up for the womad spa, you get a backstage pass and unrestricted access to the arena.

What will be annoying is, if you do want to have access to arboretum etc, sign up for the womad spa, you get a backstage pass and unrestricted access to the arena. A spa wristband only gives you access to the backstage bar when the arena is open, not unrestricted access to the arena. It does not allow you to go into the arena before it opens in the morning. It's not an access all areas pass. I do hope they give early access to the arboretum - there is a log jam around the few food stalls outside the arena in the mornings as it is and the arboretum is a lovely place to sit, walk and wait in the mornings before the main arena opens. I am guessing that they can still gate off the main arena . The reason they always give for not opening the arena to the public first thing is that they open it to traffic (delivery, rubbish, maintenenance vehicles) and can't guarantee safety. But it looking again everything is within the the arena checkpoint area - all the eating places, spa, Molly's, childrens area, shops - they surely can't close everything off till 10am ( which was normally closer to 1030) last year.

WOMAD have replied to my Facebook post but have not said if the arboretum will be open, just that there will be lots of traders offering breakfast in places before the arena opens so I have asked them to clarify whether there will be access to the spa, arboretum etc early.
