Hi Fourgomad, Welcome, your situation sounds very familiar. Mrs SC and I used to go to Glastonbury each year with our kids and other friends (parents), what used to do was the first person there grabbed enough space for all the friends tents etc. So we all camped together, that way we could all share responsibility for the friends and it allowed you to have some time off from being "Mum or Dad". Worked well at late evening or nigh, one or two adults could stay at camp whilst the kids go to bed and the other adults can have some fun at the festival. if it worked at Glastonbury, it would definitely work at Womad. Woman is much much safer, cleaner and respectful Have fun, you'll love it

as for the camping and WOMAD tips you have come to the right place
there use to be a forum on the main WOMAD site but that when the website was up graded it deleted
we did move another host site but that didn't work out but luckily we found a home here and although the number using the forum have dropped we should be able to answer any questions you have
as for group camping, most people do in one way or another
the campsite does have rule about playing music etc after a certain time and considering the amount of families with children who attend the festival you can't blame them

Woman is much much safer, cleaner and respectful Have fun, you'll love it Hi SC I've calculated there are at least 8 or 9 tents all of unknown sizes (I know one's an 8m one!π±) - I'm not sure I could save THAT much space without being confronted by an angry mob! I'm sure I read somewhere that WOMAD attendees frown on "coralling" that is large groups creating their own mini villages within the campsites. I've checked last years maps & am hoping to camp as near to the entrance as possible - I imagine that the space there will be at a premium for all early birds & again, tricky to save space - I wouldn't even know how you'd go about it. I arrived at one festival & literally had people arriving plonking down tents in my space before I'd even chance to straighten out the groundsheet for one tent, never mind 2 or three! My kids are just teens, so don't need to be in bed too early - we tend to set up a seating area in main arena as a base - away to the back of the crowd but close enough to hear the music & the kids will snooze as the night goes on. I've never done Glasto - am still undecided

If I wasn't with my kids (& others with kids) - I'd camp in the "normal" side that tend to be quieter in the morning!

That and WOMADers, especially of the Lunartic type, are like herding cats. They also often just as cute and funny as a cat video. The countdown thread has most of the casual conversations. I do recommend wandering about, as there are some other fun bits around the pub. Welcome to the madness, WOMADness that is.

I've never done Glasto - am still undecided You say you want a plot as near to the entrance as possible but you guess that space is at a premium. I presume you mean near the entrance to the arena rather than the car park. if near the Arena entrance then maybe but I'm not sure, but I wouldn't close to go there, much more noisy! more traffic from Service vehicles and people using showers and toilets etc. personally I would head down Meadow Road South, loads of space. Don't camp too near a water tap, 50m away fine, but you don't want to hear people filling up with water all the time. Access to the festival is really easy, but if you don't have a trolly of your own, as you have an 8meter tent then enter by the Red Gate and hire a "Cart to Camp", I think they are Β£20 (an hour) plus a Β£50 deposit, sounds a lot, but well worth the investment, unless you want to start the weekend as a very hot and grumpy Mum and Dad Don't make the mistake we made one year of getting the trolly before you have your wristband and ticket checked. Nothing more frustrating that stand in a queue of 100 people with a trolly costing you Β£20 an hour! The Car park is about 5 mins walk (if that) to the entrance. Order of events, arrive, leaving all stress, worries and anxiety somewhere back on the motorway, park, get booked in, hire a trolly, return to the Car, load up, find a plot, make camp, return trolley, buy a programme, return to camp, open up camping chair, sit in chair, smile, ask one of the kids to get you a can of beer out of the cooler, open Womad programme, put it back down again, smile, look up to the sky and watch for a while the puffy white clouds floating over the bright blue summer sky and think to self "This is going to be a lovely weekend, a family memory for ever"

Thanks for the advice - I know what you mean about it being busier/noisier but I do prefer camping closer - not too near the showers/loos taps but not too far to pop back to tent during the day. I was aiming to park in red car park & head straight down Smith St & park on the family side - we have posh loo tickets so would like to be close-ish to those too. Thanks for the tip about the trolley - it's not my tent, & I will have 3 trolleys! (1 cart & 2 folding 2-wheelers) My plan is to arrive first thing, set up tent(s) - go back to car & get anything we couldn't carry & wait for friends to arrive. Will there be anywhere on site serving breakfast Thurs morning?

the family and festival camping are kind of the same
years ago WOMAD swap them around but many people (including us) just kept camping in the same spot
loads of people set up mini villages so don't worry about it
if you can get in earlier on the Thursday so much the better, we have been luck most years and end up getting parked within a minute or less walk from the entrance. The area we camp in is usual less than 5 minutes walk from the gate (and about 5 minutes walk from the entrance to the WOMAD area etc (unless they move things again) so once we get out tent up (a large old school tunnel tent which take us about 45 minutes to put up) we then take turns to get the rest of your gear from the car. Last year we were all set up and enjoying a mug of coffee by 10.30 am
We tend to carry our own gear and save the Β£20 for the real ale tent (Del is Scottish after all)
we have never use the posh loos and the site poos and showers are normally okay, the only year we can recall problems was 2012 which seemed to be down to the Olympics but each to their own
There will be a set of food stalls and shops by the Molly's bar (they usually open 24 hours too) so you'll be fine for food and the area will open in the early afternoon with most stall etc open for business
last year the area was open earlier as the stall holders felt they were missing out on trade
the food at WOMAD is very good and you will find something you will like
Make sure you check out some bands at the taste the world stage too, it's the best way to get to know the artist behind the music, have some fun, try some food

Personally I find family camping noisier than regular, particularly first thing in the morning!! I'm getting a new tent that should be quite speedy to put up (my current tent takes about 10 mins) - I've got a mahoosive dome tent that takes about 45 minutes to fully pitch & I just can't be doing with that anymore π you say you take turns to get rest of gear - I'm assuming that once you've pitched then leaving your tent unattended to fetch the rest of the stuff shouldn't be a problem either? I'm hoping a super early arrival on Thursday will mean we'll have the afternoon to chill out a bit & catch our breath before the main event kicks off. I've booked posh loos predominantly because my son has IBD and it's for piece of mind over the long weekend more than anything - me? I'll pee in a bucket if I have to! #TMI π I'm looking forward to trying all the different food - I'm not a "festival camp chef" - I will bring basics & snacks but I never cook full meals - not when there's so much on offer & so much to see & do! Besides - it's less to carry too. One question - do they restrict taking alcohol into the main arena? I'm not a big drinker as such (& less so when I'm on my own with the kids) but I know different festivals have different rules & restrictions, I just don't want to get caught out. I'm really getting excited about my first WOMAD, this will be the biggest festival I've done, I'm "fairly new" to the festival scene - I put it off for so many years - we'll have just got back from another festival the previous Sunday so I probably won't bother unpacking the car!

good call re the posh loos for piece of mind for you son and your additional information show you fit right it on this forum
The site is big but not too big and once you get your baring it's easy to get about
Glass in not permitted in the arena and your not meant to take in alcohol in too but as long as your carrying a crate of beers on your shoulders and carry your refreshments discreetly you should be fine
as yet no steward has every dare to check Del's sporran and he always has a dram on tap, and he is always happy to share
