That sums up the forum for me, why it was so disappointing womad cancelled their official forum and so grateful that we have found a new home here. When I first went to womad, initially to see Taraf de Haidouks, I had a long list of acts I knew nothing about. It was only by ploughing through the forum adding up favourable comments that I managed to produce a personal schedule of who I wanted to see. The website videos are good but nothing beats word of mouth, especially from the knowledgeable bunch of folks on here.

The website videos are good but nothing beats word of mouth, especially from the knowledgeable bunch of folks on here. Me too. Over the years, I've got a hang of people's varied music tastes and who's recommendations I'm likely to find on my favourites list. Also jotting down artists I've heard on World on 3 so I know I won't miss them if they appear on the line-up announcements. I check out the music I wouldn't usually go for if someone else is really excited about it too; sometimes that makes my favourite list too! It is nice to know who to look out for at the stages too... shared experiences, shared memories... all that.

Del struggled at his first WOMAD as he only had the program to go on (pre youtude days) and he know we missed some great bands that year
checking out the bands before hand does take some of the fun of discovering something new however it does mean we get the chance to get down the front for those extra special bands ;o)

I'll never forget hearing Rachid Taha for the first time from my tent at Rivermead in the early 2000s ...and instantly regretted going back to my tent... and I really wish I'd seen Ibbio Sound Machine a couple of years ago... they were in the Big Red tent and I just never get around to going there.... but I'm sure we'll all miss/see some great music however we make our choices...

I still haven't a faintest idea who I will be seeing. Can't really plan until timetable is published.
Roll on next announcement though

I normally rock up with a meticulously coloured clash finder, based on lots of research, which I then ignore as WOMAD randomness takes over.

Thanks SS but I wouldn't call it a skill - it stems from the first time I went to Womad - 1994 - I'd never been to a festival before - I didn't know anything really about "World Music" and couldn't persuade anyone to go with me . . . I knew almost nothing about the names on the line-up - but I just knew that I needed to go - it really was that profound a feeling. . . so I just went and hoped for the best. . . . still remember banging those first Womad tent pegs into the concrete-like sun baked Reading grass/mud.. . . . and it was the best.

You just dont know what you will like, in 1979 I went to a gig Beanstew wasnt at, it was U2 in the Student union at Bristol Poly,I walked out but heard them from the bar and quite liked them. They came into the bar afterwords loud and full of themselves Bono was soaked in sweat next to me. My friend Rachel really gave my 2016 Womad a boost by showing me artists I would not have chosen to see. Give in to Randomness.

Saw the wonderful Maarja Nuut last night (lots of people in the Colston Hall to see Jimmy Carr, if only they knew what they were missing across the foyer). Well, she is lovely and met her afterwards (SC, I have a better CD than you as mine is signed). Mesmerising performance with short Estonian folk stories to introduce the music and songs, using a loop to provide a vocal background to the stories. Surprised that she was solo but she is able to use the loop to build up intricate sounds.
The lantern is a smaller hall and as we were all there to hear Maarja it was totally quiet and intimate, sadly not a sold out performance and I know a few people who were not seeing her In Bristol as she is on their Womad agenda. When she comes to womad, she will not be alone on stage so will be a different style of performance. Maybe a bit louder to compete with talking and other background noise.
Overall, a really special and intimate performance. Recommended for womad but if you get the chance to see her elsewhere as well, go for it.
