OK I'm down from my box now and I realise I'm possible the only leaver on this board which is why I keep my head down

A place to Chunter, is the usual home for politics. I too would be interested in sensible respectful debate.

Enjoyed reading your review, SC. I take a small camcorder with me and I try to film a clip or two of each act I see. Not only is it good to watch them again to get back into the Womad spirit, but it's also good to remember what you've seen and might have otherwise forgotten (due to being knackered and/or too much to drink!). And thanks for the sample of your 'Big Peat' malt.

Thursday Arrived on site at about 10am and pitched up at Meadow Park and Camp Up the hill around 2pm for a quiet wander around the arena and arboretum before retreating to shelterbox for a coffee.
Merry gathering in the sunshine at the Golden Lion. Enjoyed putting faces to forum nicknames (again), sampling various potent brews (Big Peat - SC) and something from India (Cal). Adjourned to Wave at the Urinals and Webby (how mad must this look). DorsetHelen was engrossed in a book and lost track of time.
Sheelangig & Malmesbury Schools - watched some of this and photographed the flags in lovely light (again), then had some tasty beef ribs from Nomad Caravan. Bixaga70 - surprised to find space on the rail just 10 minutes before the performance started and enjoyed the whole set from in front of the percussion section - a great start to the festival. Saw Hootdrummer there. Paused at Baobab Orchestra before calling it an (early) night.
Friday Rajab Suleiman & Kithara Workshop Kakatsitsi Workshop A warming Mac Cheese kept us going while we waited for the delayed ... Maarja Nuut Workshop had equipment problems after the delayed arrival on site and we didn't get much music. Disappointing - in hindsight we should have gone to see the Syrian Orchestra. Drifted around the site and enjoyed snippets of Alsarah (TTW, talked and cooked, no music), NY Theremin Society (the new compositions by Dorit Chrysler were beautiful to see and hear) & Don Kipper Maya Youssef's instrumental set at Ecotricity was absorbing. Traditional tunes as well as some lovely original compositions. Beanstew was there. Stayed for the whole set and will be looking for her album when it is released later this year. Viguela (TTW) - a great taster for their late performance in the SIAM, but I ran out of steam long before midnight Maarja Nuut - good to meet or wave at forum friends (Del, Nigenet, Mikey, Beanstew, Rendrags, SC). I loved the traditional story-telling songs and the vocal / violin loops, but the gig didn't hit the high spots that I was expecting. The heavens opened as I found myself at Junun & Rajastan Express. The SIAM was totally rammed on the Open Air Stage side, but plenty of room on the opposite. Stayed for a few songs, but it wasn't working for me. Khmer Rouge Survivors - Very moving and I was very glad to catch the second half of their set Alsarah & the Nubatones - Enjoyed the set, full of energy and East African shoulder shimmying. Goat - Caught a song or two. Trad Attack - ditto, very enjoyable and a bit different Jamie Smith's Mabon - Got there early and found my usual spot between the stage and the PA riser. Great crowd and great music - a highlight for me.
Saturday Zhou Family Band Workshop - delightful and loud (even without amplification) Savinna Yanattou - lots of great music and tasty food. Another highlight Toko Telo - One of my must-sees. Just the two of them, but such an upbeat performance. Bokate - first half. Some great musicians - what was that lap-steel guitar type thingy? Pavathy Baul & Somjt Dasgupta - I also wanted to see some of Portico Quartet, but stayed for all of Pavathy Baul - engaging and mesmerising, outwhirled the dervish. Would see again (but couldn't stay up late on Sunday) Bombino Savinna Yannatou - enjoyed her Taste the World Session so came back to see her with her full band Afro Celt Sound System - stayed on after Savinna Yannatou to be at the front (but missed Lamomali). My gig Highlight
Sunday Cerys Matthews - different format to last two years, with fewer artists playing longer sets. A good programme - Las Cafeteras, Msafiri Zawose & The Ska Avengers Taiko Meantime - first ten mins or so Mamadou Diabate - great fun, felt like a big workshop session. Stayed to the end of the set Noureddine Khourchid & the Whirling Dervish - didn't quite get the whirling, but enjoyed the music Ghada Shbier Eliza Carthy - seen her before, but couldn't resist. Didn't disappoint Procession - the sun shone! Wandered via Msafiri Zwose (no backing band?), Loney Dear (beautiful singing), Spooky Men's Choral (Taste the World) Nick Mulvey Ska Vengers Wellingtons went walkabout :-)
Great music throughout the programme, Great Food, Great People (particularly the random encounters with forum friends)
Back next year for our tenth WOMAD
