I went to Glastonbury last year for the first time and did have a good time. I understand though why people would choose to avoid. I think if people who haven't ever been it is worth going once. If you can stump up the cash and put up with a potentially 5-6 day festival.
I like to go back one day and not wonder around in the shadow of the total bewilderment, shock and anger at the referendum result.
Ale was okay. Sometimes disappointing.

Cal went to Glasto when she was a teenager but stopped going as she didn't feel safe walking past group of drug dealers in between the stages We had a similar experience the first year year we went. It was the first year of the Big Wall, all the trouble was outside were dealers and very dodgy people couldn't get in over the wall. So they sat next to the queue to the entrance, stoned or tripping, hurling abuse and threats at ticket holders, some, I heard mugged people in the car parks for their tickets. A friend of mine who was a stall holder there in the '80's has some real horror stories. On the 2nd year of the wall, the aggression was much reduced as security was massively ramped up. By seeing the type of people that were hurling abuse outside, it must have been awful when they used to been inside, wandering the campsites.

Ha ha, I've seen the riot van at Reading but it wasn't me either There are dealers at every festival, but I think they're more discreet these days. At Glastonbury the rastas used to stand at the entrance to the Stones whispering 'sensimilla' when you walked by. I'm sure Womad has dealers too if you look hard enough. Some aren't too discreet though. My friend's 16 year old son got caught with a big bag of weed at Charlton Park about three years ago. Needless to say he was spotted and kicked off site by security. To be fair they could have involved police but the only anguish that was caused was to his parents who had to get off site to make sure he got on a train home. The worry as to what he was doing once he got home was something else but he learned his lesson. Anyway, my mum would probably be appalled that I know so much about drugs so please don't tell her

Seen quite a number of dealers at Womad, which annoys me. No issue with people having weed for their own consumption but not to be a ‘business opportunity’ for others and who knows what they are selling or whether it is safe or not. Also, now there is the no smoking ban, really do notice second hand smoke and health wise, feel my heart racing if exposed to cigarette smoke. convinced that if I smoke I would be dead from heart disease by now. What I am saying is wh3n I am standing In the Siam tent please do not stand right next to me blowing smoke in my direction, whether weed or tobacco.

Know a few people who used to work for the local council around Glastonbury. They were often called on to volunteer to record entry numbers and ensure licence conditions were not being breached, no involvement other than counting punters going in. Great opportunity to do a shift at overtime rates and then sell the ticket they were given on the gate and make a bit more money (or get in to the festival for free). Remember one story about a hippy turning up with a large axe hanging from his belt, he could not understand why they would not allow him to enter with the axe still in his possession ‘hey, but it’s my axe man’.

'The wall' probably saved the festival. Some festivals are more porous than others and an important part of the design is keeping the boundary safe, non porous to illegal access and unrestricted exit (high/drunk people falling into rivers, fast roads etc etc) and ensuring sterile routes for emergency services to access all areas of the site quickly. Basically the festival had lost control of its boundary and about 30% of people had gone over/ under/ round the fences. Sounds great but the facilities couldn't cope and dealers etc had open access. Mendip Council noted multiple serious breaches of the site conditions, "no festival ever again again unless you sort it out". Glasto went to Mean Fiddler- now Festival Republic to get much needed help. 37,000 people work at the festival to service the whole thing. An effective 'steel shield' as it is known and experienced event security were put in place and you can now gather 100k people on 7 dairy farms in a safe way.
