Thanks for this SS! It was going to be a busy morning tomoorow, having to fit in a haircut appointment, Waitrose shop, clearing any snow that's been dumped on us overnight, and anxiously waiting for the 10.00 announcement. Now I can look through the list at leisure this evening and even start looking up those unfamiliar names earlier than planned! I wonder whether whoever released the list at Womad has been given a telling off?! Really pleased to be seing Amadou and Mariam at last! Oooooh - I hope nobody got told off,Rendrags! Hope the morning has gone well for you and you had a very enjoyable evening!

Nobody mentioned Sharon Shannon yet. I have been a fan since her days with the Waterboys. Have seen her loads of times, including at festivals, and she is always a highlight. At the end of her shows you see everybody leaving with huge smiles on their faces. The late great John Peel was a fan too. Hoping that she will do something slightly different because it is Womad. Justin Adams co-produced her latest album 'Sacred Earth'.

Justin Adams co-produced her latest album 'Sacred Earth'. Totally agree that Sharon is someone very special. The first time we saw her was at Glastonbury on the Acoustic Stage, back then we went as a large group of parents with a tribe of kiddies. That way we could have one or two parents "baby sitting" whilst the rest went off for fun without the worry or distraction of kids. Anyway Mrs SC and I were on baby sitting duty whilst Sharon was on. We were outside the tent which was in a nice small field, with a bar and toilets, perfect. As Sharon played the kids started dancing in a circle, there were about 15 kids. Sharon saw this from the stage and asked her manager to come out and take a photo of the kids dancing, the manger approached us and asked if that was ok and we said "yes of course" but unfortunately that prompted the kids to stop dancing, no photo was therefore taken, but the attempt and thought by Sharon has put her in a special place in our hearts. Second time we saw was when Mrs SC and I were touring Ireland and we saw her in a little club in Dublin, it was a very very special gig for us, as she treated the gig as though she was simply playing at home with just friends and family. She is a lovely lady. Oddly we have never bought one of her CD's, that should be put right! Any recommendations?

Sharon Shannon has been a highlight for me. I also saw her at the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury the other year. Alas I have no interesting anecdotes to report🙂
She performed twice at WOMAD 2008. Once with a number of guest vocalists including one Shane Macgowan in the Siam tent. They did Fairytale of NY. Didn't catch the second set, think she was on BBc3 Stage.

Oddly we have never bought one of her CD's, that should be put right! Any recommendations? This is tricky. With trad the CDs are always different from the live experience. She has plenty of good CDs: - ‘The Diamond Mountain Sessions’, with lots of big name guests including Steve Earle (singing the original version of ‘Galway Girl’), Jackson Browne, John Prine; - ‘Tunes’, an instrumental, very trad, album with Michael McGoldrick on flute and Frankie Gavin on fiddle; - ‘Out The Gap’, my personal favourite; this was only her second ever album, produced by Donal Lunny. If you want something that best represents one of her gigs though I would go for ‘Sharon Shannon & Alan Connor in Galway’, which has all the big tunes. Lovely story about the dancing children by the way.
