Cambridge Folk Festival have a new artistic director since last year, who is female. There was a "ladies day", where all the acts on the main stage and most on the smaller stages were female or female-led. The Indigo Girls headlined the main stage. There was no grand announcement about this, and since the gender divide in folk music is quite small anyway it almost went unnoticed. This years' headliners include First Aid Kit and Patti Smith. Guest curator Rhiannon Giddens has selected all female acts as well - interesting names that don't appear at other festivals. Good stuff. Not sure why the percentage of women in folk is bigger than in rock, but there you go.

Not sure why the percentage of women in folk is bigger than in rock, but there you go. Interesting point that "Folk" music has a better female representation than "Rock". Also the subject matter covered by Folk music is more orientated towards issues concerning women. As a quick thought, perhaps it is because Folk music originated from communities and spoke to those communities, so the songs were not just about the 3 big subjects of pop music 1) "I've just started going out with the most beautiful boy/girl in world and I'm so happy about it"; 2)"I've just split up with the most beautiful boy/girl in the world and I'm so unhappy" and 3) "Let's have a Party", but rather grappling with concerns such as, unwanted pregnancy, birth control, sexual diseases, putting food on the table, the lose of family members, the lose of a husband in a world were women didn't do paid work, the lose of a child, child birth etc etc. I've probably phrased it wrong as it is a spontaneous thought, but I bet equality comes from the original source.
