Wow! - I have never seen a kestrel catching mayflies with feet and eating them on the wing, kite style, from foot to beak - fantastic! That was my overall highlight of the first week of Springwatch. As always, treated to stunning camerawork; glorious sense of wonderment and well being. I cried with Gary.................

Just back from redbrook festival on the Wye. Great little festival with a fabulous camp site right on the river...ok so long as you do not mind being woken early by brdsong, ducks, geese etc. 😀 This morning sat by my tent watching kingfishers, salmon leaping, swans. Not perfect, it would be have been better if saw eight salmon a leaping, seven Swans a swimming, six geese a laying and perhaps finally a partridge in a pear tree....anyway, guess you get the idea. Wish I thought to take the binoculars, especially to watch a buzzard (?) being chased off by smaller songbirds. Without the bins unable to see clear enough to identify.

Mikey, that sounds just perfect! Saw something new yesterday - a magpie flying off with a rat in it beak. Well, wither a rat or a hamster - looked too big for a mouse. And something lovely and precarious - blue tit chick on point of fledging, head out of nestbox, cheeping away, getting first dibs at food. Hope they all make it safely away.

Do not read this if easily upset.
I was told by a colleague about renovations on an old property which had bats roosting in the loft. To complete the work, it was a requirement to construct a bat roost for tens of thousands of pounds and the bats successfully relocated.
Unfortunately, an owl decided to move in as well and ate the whole lot of them. Still, the plann8ng consent was complied with and the work completed,

Feeders all a twitter and a flap this morning with goldfinch and greenfinch fledgelings being fed by parents - lovely sight. The blue tits at my Leeds City Centre lunch spot have left the nest - all quiet now. Have bat box to put up - still deliberating over where best to place. There are bats and barn owls and tawny owls here - they seem to have found a balance. So pleased the bat roost ws still completed, Mikey - all we can do is give things a chance, then it is up to them.
