.. are you in Whitby, Hooty? Yes SS I was in Whitby. I was fab. Friday night was Baka Beyond fantastic, and Mokoomba more fantastic. Saturday I can’t remember much about but Dobet Gnahoré rocked the joint but my discovery was Olcay Bayir from Turkey. Wonderful and her album is due out soon. I’ve ordered mine. She had an amazing drummer. Also fantastic we’re festival closing band Tankus the Henge. Check them out on YouTube. Their stage upright piano had a smoke generator inside which filled the whole stage with smoke. It’d be great to see them at cp next year. As a plus for Musicport they have nice draught beer at £3 /pint. Xx even I did a half hour set on the open mic stage !!!

I was there too, third year in a row and very enjoyable again. There seemed to be a few more people this year although when the audience were asked if this was their first time, I think only my wife raised her hand. She's not been to a music festival since a Womad in Reading many years back, when she swore never again, but even she enjoyed it, and may be back next year.
Musical highlights as suggested by Hotdrummer plus for me some of the folk artists (Luar Na Lubre, Kolonien and Andreas Tophoj/ Rune Barslund were all excellent). The lead clarinet of Hamsa was also rather wonderful.
Merlyn Driver's story about why he has an English accent despite being born and bred on the Orkney's was errrm interesting and I also saw the worst performance of any artist in many years of watching music - Shurooq Abu Elnaas was dreadful, her version of some pop song which she sang in English being the worst song I have ever heard sung.
Overall I think many of you guys would enjoy this festival, so why not give it a go next year for their 20th anniversary.

And for the worst song ever - not an accolade lightly given! It all does sound fab. I'll have to get there some year soon

I remember Olcay Bayir from Womad CP a few years ago. She was great - we queued in the rain for a signed CD afterwards. Beanstew I know is a great fan. Think he's seen her about 98 times!

I paid a quick visit to this performance in the theatre and soon left as did a lot of people. Sorry I missed you Olirow. A beer would have been forthcoming
