Sad news, but as you say it was bound to be... At least it means I've already got my ticket for 2021 though

See you in 2021 🙂 Not unexpected but still a blow, hope it will not be too much of a loss for Womad itself. In a way, a bit relieved, in that ‘now we know’. Better to have tickets for for a great Womad 2021 than one that would have struggled to fill with artists across the world.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. What are we going to do in July? . Perhaps ill get a firkin of beer from a local brewery and have a bbq with live music. At least we can hope is that Musicport will be on in October. Love to all. See you in Whitby (or in my back garden 😃) 🤞🏼 Xx

Definitely a blow. I was hoping that end of July might just be late enough to allow the festival to proceed. Interesting wording in the announcement which states that Womad were told to cancel, and perhaps implies that it was a decision they didn't necessarily agree with, or felt was premature.
It is now just possible that Musicport might be the only music festival to take place in the UK this year, which would be a claim to fame, and probably lead to another sell out...

Thanks for letting everyone know Rendrags. Disappointing as it is, it's probably better to cancel now. Can't live in the 'if it improves', as if it doesn't waiting longer would put a bigger financial burden on not only visiting acts, but potentially everyone visiting.

Would seem WOMAD were told to cancel, given the straight the NHS us under anything that would draw resources or need policing was bound to be pulled

My thoughts are that Womad made the effort to ask the relevant govt department and was told that it would need to cancel (remember the 19th march post that said they were listening to advice from govt and health experts). In which case, top marks for being proactive and getting the wait for us (+ the support contractors, the traders, and the performers) over with. there are other festivals scheduled at the same time that have posted nothing about this situation and are still promoting the sale of tickets! They will be told on Tuesday that, with a further period of lockdown, there is no way we can risk large gatherings and they have to cancel. Womad 2021 is gonna be blooming brilliant

Here's to the scientists worldwide working on a safe vaccine as fast as true science will allow.

Yip, we are all forming an orderly queue to catch covid19.
For those at the back of the queue you have more chance of not catching it before a vaccine is found.
Until then keep your place in the queue.

We need to flatten the curve so the NHS/public health has half a chance of coping which means it will be a long haul. Trump got it wrong and mass graves are being dug. We are approaching and can see the tsunami, but it yet to break and wash over us in the UK. I cannot foresee any mass gatherings being allowed in 2020, there will be some easing to permit shopping by the end of June and to make it acceptable to the public. The vaccine is a hope but the virus now has 8 mutations now, it will be a difficult ask of the scientists. My next door neighbour (a proff. of virology) is working today on getting a reliable test out ASAP. By July 2021, we will know the length of immunity, there will be some herd immunity, there will be tests, so if you have not had it you can be tested to see if you have unbeknown had it and can safely attend. There could be a vaccine, My God there must be a festival!! I hope to be there.

Not only the US but we called it wrong as well. Remember there was talk of flattening the curve through herd immunity and there would be lots of tracing and testing. Totally wrong. bJ went to the rugby international three days before Cheltenham Festival and days before the lock down was implemented. How many lives lost because transmissions of the virus spread across the county + Ireland through just these two events. And whatever plans Our government thought they were going to implement were criminally lacking through lack of testing kits and PPE. Unless all governments can work together to contain and reduce with proper measures in place we will be unable to relax restrictions until a vaccine comes along some time next year (fingers crossed). Look at Vietnam, they were able to contain through shutdown of schools, minimal of deaths and largely dodged the worst, that is until one person returned from a fashion show in Italy and wham, it flares up again. but yes, let’s hope all governments can get it right and hopefully we will be able to meet up July 2021, we will need a good festival by then 😊
