We wonder if all the extra stress of the last 2 years took it toll.
This year will be our second Musicport and hopefully not the last.
The lineup looks good but we've still not had a chance to check out the bands and start to plan who we'll see.

Fingers crossed someone does, but we also wonder if the events of the last 18 months will put people off who otherwise would have taken it on.
is the world ready for a festival of kilts, hip flasks, sideburns and tie dye based music?

Musicport - highlights so far. I may pad this out a bit later ...
Iness Mezel - unforgettable Berber language songs, beautifully sung, made me cry, that doesn't often happen these days
Cleveland Watkiss - leading the audience in a fabulous rendition of Scarborough Fair in an otherwise rather chaotic performance that somehow still worked
Les Vents de Nord - 'it's rare to get the opportunity to play to an audience at 10.30am'. Fourth time I have seen them, they were on fire!
The beards - in a competition with many entries, in third place, with something that didn't look quite real, but probably was, the lead singer of Monsieur Doubami, coming in second, take a bow Mr Paul Armfield, but way ahead with a fabulous creation that must be hell to live with, Lu Edmonds, a fantastic effort...
It would be a tragedy if this turns out to be the last Musicport.

What a fabulous weekend Musicport was! Highlights for me: Thursday: - Traveling up with friends we picked up on the way made the the journey seem half the length it really was - Curry House meal for all nine Womad friends who we were sharing the Airb&b with Friday: - Dawn photos from the end of the Habour Wall - Exploring Whitby, the Jet Museum and the Abbey with friends - Walking towards Musicport and coming across a couple with a guitar case who are clearly lost. We stop and ask if we can help, he replies, "We've never been to Whitby before, do you know where The Pavilion is?" We tell them that we're also going there, and to come along with us. As we walk, he asks about the history of Musicport, we tell him what little we know and we all chat easily together as we walk. I wish him well as we approach the steps and ask who he's playing with, he thanks us and says Les Triaboligues. I respond, "Ah that's the band Justin Adams is playing with, that should be good" He responds "I am Justin Adams" - Lovely little boogie to DJ Garth Cartwright (Balkan set) - Another boogie to Mas Y Mas Saturday: - Fabulous Film preview of Father Earth - A film by Graham Fellows to be released next year, starring Graham Fellows (aka Jilted John and John Shuttleworth), his Dad and his son, exploring saving the world, father/son relationships and hope a tear welled up for me at the Kayak scene if anyone else sees it. Followed by a Q&A session with Graham Fellows - Loved it - also bumped into Graham Fellows afterwards outside the pavilion and had a little chat. - Lady Nade - wonderful, reminded me of a young Joan Armatrading, beautiful voice, so impressed I bought two CDs - Disraeli - rap/spoken word with such emotional music! - Honeyfeet - Great fun Sunday: - Trying to find the old Jet cave whilst the tide was low, possibly finding it and it being packed with so many fossils! A wonderful Whitby secret - The Ciderhouse Rebellion - utterly magical that reached even higher heights when joined by the violinist's daughter Jessie Summerhayes for some spoken word - so impressed I bought 3 CDs - Mary Coughlan - Slipping out and enjoying a meal with my wife, I had a main of mussels whilst she, half a Lobster - Oh such decadence - Tankus The Henge - Great fun party time! Hints of The Cat Empire? - Simon Wood - Playing around with Hang Pans and electronic loops etc. It was a bit like a mate showing off some new kit to you when he himself hasn't yet polished what he was doing. I thoroughly enjoyed it, very personal and then a friend to all of you on this forum, our very own Hotdrummer/Yendor was invited up to play Jews Harp on one tune - Brilliant! - Of course Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita was a perfect finish - Sunday was of course one of the gangs birthday, so all the silliness surrounding that! Hope you had a great and memorable Birthday mate! - A wonderful weekend - lets hope someone picks up the reins in the future!

We had a lovely time at musicport, especially sharing the WOMAD 9
lots of great music and Del's top picks were (in no particular order)
The Ciderhouse Rebellion, very impressive, partly improvised set
Kinaara, mesmeric mix of indian and western styles of music
Monsieur Doumani, started of as Cyprian folk which evolved into a psychedelic delight
Honeyfeet, Del loon danced doon the front
Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, the perfect end to a wonderful weekend

Sounds great - I have very fond memories of a couple of trips to Whitby back in the 90s... never been to Musicport unfortunately.. what is it actually like - one indoor venue?

Yes, all indoors at Whitby Pavilion, 4 or 5 stages in separate halls and theatre within the Pavilion complex. Quite a small festival, I think pre Covid it was around 1,500 tickets, very friendly, age profile probably similar to Womad possibly a little older. Beautiful location with windows of Pavilion giving a view of Whitby bay and sea. Food is quite basic at the festival itself, but The Pavilion is positioned right in Whitby which is a bustling and vibrant town rammed with thriving independent shops, pubs, restaurants, fish and chip shops and Co-op, pretty much a limitless eating options, all accessible within a one band slot 😃

You say the food is quite basic but the Mary burger from the outside van was epic, one a day was enough, I didn't need to eat anything else... Their first time, hope it's not their last.
The Pavilion itself is very municipal, but once you get used to it, it's a great venue for an October festival. Oh, and the audience is ancient, sorry but it's true, very few youngsters attend, which is a great shame. Justin Adams has actually played at Musicport before, but it was when the event was at Bridlington, back in 2009. Finally, I had no idea Graham Followes was Jilted John!, that song is a classic, Gordon is a moron! It will stick in my head now...

Yes Justin Adams did say he thought he’d played Musicport before but never been to Whitby 😃 Age profile - I was trying to be polite 😂🤣😂 Mary’s Burgers - Didn’t try them, the only time I did try for one was at a lunch time (Sunday I think) and was told ‘“we’ll be open at 2”
