Almost unbelievable ! Me and familee went to Sefton Park in Liverpool on Sunday for the return of Africa Oye festival. We arrived for a set by Ni Maxine, newcomer to the scene, excellent grooves followed by Valerie Ekoume, the evergreen groover Kanda Bongo Man, then someone whose name I didn’t catch, then highlight and Hi Life for me , Santrofi. Lots of brilliant percussion on congas, kit, bougabarous, calabash you name oh yes, talking drum. The day was finished off by Malian superstar Oumou Sangare. Some really great music and all free ! Saturday was equally star studded but we went to Middlewich Boat and Music fest where the Waterboys were headlining. So far this year I’m up to five festivals; surely not enough? What’s your score ?😍

The Waterboys were also headlining Black Deer on Saturday, their show was curtailed due to a thunderstorm mid-set, were they really headlining two festivals in one day?
Oye sounds excellent, must make a note to go one year...

Yes Olirow, Oye has been a regular in my calendar for the past ten years or so. Also nice to see a good proportion of ethnicities other than white caucasians. There’s another topic !
