Anyway Stonehenge is only 64 years old, it was rebuilt in 1958, stones set in concrete and may be lined up with the sun by a couple of digger drivers, I can hear the conversation now ...."Here Bert what day is it? 21st June. Harry, Shall we line all them stones up with sun, make it look nice and neat and it will use less concrete, Good idea Bert. May be Zen has no interest in our stones, we have some great steam heritage railways. You don’t think of the ‘restoration’ being that intensive or the amount of concrete that was used. Explains why the site was in private ownership until donated to the nation and if it had not been donated, could it have been ploughed over and lost to the nation?

I think predictive text is giving Aylesbury instead of the intended Avebury. I used to live 6 miles away and visit it often along with East Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill. Tip - use the free parking on the A4 at Silbury Hill, visit that and the long barrow on the opposite side of the road, then return to Silbury Hill and walk through to Avebury Henge from there - it is a nice approach. Alternatively, there is a small amount of free parking at the start of The Avenue, which is, for me, the most impressive way to approach the stones. 9f course, you can always park at The Red Lion in the Stone circle and enjoy a refreshment there... Crikey, wish I could blame predictive text but I got my Avebury and Aylesbury completely mixed up, forgot the old saying ‘go to Aylesbury where there are ducks to be eaten, but Avebury has stones that can’t be beaten’ (as told by Jack Hargreaves on How!). well spotted Standing Stone, would never forgive myself if Zen went all the way to Aylesbury for no reason. You may have typed it wrong, but I read it right. I saw it as Avesbury, as I've been there and agree it is a wonderful place. The first time I went there was no paid parking. The last time I went there, it was a free parking day at the paid parking. Not sure if that's normal, but I'll take free whenever I can get it. I would definitely be up to meeting people there. Much as when I manage to cross the pond I try to find places I haven't been, which is many, there are places I have a hard time not revisiting.

Explains why the site was in private ownership until donated to the nation and if it had not been donated, could it have been ploughed over and lost to the nation? That is interesting. Have been there around 1989 or 90. Someone had spray painted something on it, can't remember what, but they had canvas tarps covering some of them. Not great for photos. I have heard something about what's on the video, but didn't realize how extensive the 'restoration' was. With it messed around with so much, it's not really more than a tourist attraction like the world's biggest ball of yarn, is it? It's proximity to London certainly helps for the tourist trade and perhaps they put it back together relatively well. With how many people that go there, it's understandable they don't want everyone climbing on the stones, but it does take something out of the visit. As it is, Europeans that expanded throughout the USA destroyed most ancient sites across the USA. You can find a fragment here and there, and a few areas managed to survive somewhat. Like Cahokia Mounds, though archeological excavations has caused erosion issues and sunk in some spots on some of the mounds. Still a kind of neat place to visit if you find yourself near St. Louis.

It is a lovely place and there could well be crop circles in the surrounding fields. There's The Circle Cafe on the A4 with info as to where to find them, if this appeals. I admire the effort the aliens put into making these wonderful designs with their ropes and boards - very clever!

An Thursday evening meeting would be cool, last time we planned to meet at the golden lion but they had no beer!!!! so we relocated to the real ale tent. not sure if there will be a webby this year as the cyberworld has moved on as load of festival goers will be live streaming (hopefully not from the loos) I think the meet at 6pm Thursday evening around the tables at the Golden Lion (or Real Ale Tent) then trundle off to webby (if it still exists) at 7pm worked well 👍. 6pm gives peps a chance to settle in their tent and get there bearings in the afternoon, before a beer a chat, a laugh then off we go to drown in glorious music ❤️

Golden Lion or Real Ale Tent? I prefer Real Ale to drink, but think the Golden Lion is a better place to meet as the outside tables are more likely to be available to us - and there will be some of us who will welcome a chance to sit a while!

I’m easy either way, but Golden Lion may have a greater choice of drinks
