Nice to see the Pantheon in your pics, SS, I thought it was amazing that it was still so well preserved and original after 2 millennia. Also what I thought was wonderful is that when Hadrian constructed it he demolished a building that was already on the site, but still used the original buildings inscription so that credit was given to the original building designer rather than to himself. Top man Also the fact that it was the first to have a dome constructed in such a manner and that other famous domes were all based on Hadrians design to keep it up, (St Peters, The White House, St Paul's etc) Brilliant

Went to the Barrow Hill Rail/Ale Festival this weekend up in Derbyshire. Best beer festival I've ever attended, so much better than those here down South when all you get is a large marque in a bland boring field. The site is not only a railway museum but also a working rail maintenance facility
It meant missing The Flying Scotsman steaming through Reading

Ooo - I'll watch when I#ve a clear 10.29 mins S.C. - thanks Three fog bound days on the North Yorkshire coast followend by a wonderful sunny morning, beach cleaning, kittiwake, rock pipit, oystercatcher, herring gull, cormorant and skylark watching. Visited RSPB Saltholme twice; watched a long eared owl quartering for ages; saw lots of sand martins there for the first time. A celebration of all things Yorkshire expressed in knitting on the pier - fabulous. It is getting harder to leave....

SS I put that one here by mistake as I do them I'm putting them in the following section of the Forum, Full Moon Pub / Full Moon Pub / Bike Talk, seems more appropriate than here

? not sure why more appropriate, but thanks,S.C. will enjoy watching! I dunno just thought "Weekends Away" was more City Breaks, nice walking areas etc. and I would be inappropriate to put it there

Sod it, not really a weekend away but a holiday in Somerset
A review of Glastonbury (if no one minds )
Getting There I was on coach package, took us 3 and a half hours. Not bad, coach driver took us down some single track back streets before we had hour delay near Shepton Mallet. Near arrival coaches had own private road that took us right to Gate A. Some poor sods were queuing overnight for 10 or 12 hours overnight Tuesday so we timed it perfectly
Mud - yes, worse than Womud. Problem was all the rain that arrived during the sites contruction the week before. It had no chance to really recover. No real hot weather so the drying out took long time. And then it rained again, usually over night. So no chance for chilly on grass
Food and ale - food excellent, had a couple vegi dishes including stir fry at Manic Organic that I loved. A salmon wrap also delicious. Ale okay with most bars having something. The bar near the Acoustic stage had a decent selection but nothing has extensive as Real Ale Bar at WOMAD. £5 a pint in most instances
Tributes - yes, a few Bowie and Prince things going on and an Ace od Spades sign above Other Stage. But most poignant was the playing of Portishead's cover of SOS as a tribute to the murdered Labour MP Jo Cox. Very moving
People - if I go again I will invest in ear plugs as late night chatter in campsite went on and on. Extremely disappointed in the rubbish and tents left around on Monday morning. So much for the "Leave nothing but your muddy footprints". Generally people were okay but think WOMAD is far friendly
The Music - in the main excellent. DhakaBraka went down a storm, so much so a thread dedicated to them started on the Glasto forum. My highpoints were Ronnie Spector (ended with a cover of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black followed by Be My Baby with Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top; Sigur Ros, incredible light show; Sam Lee, he performed last song in the crowd with his band singing a capella, we all had to huddle up around them, maybe 30 of us; the best discovery were The Ben Miller Band, sound liked a bluegrass version of The Band, great version of The House of the Rising Sun. Other highlights, Squeeze, Damon Albarn and the Syrain Orchestra (Damon had a few words about the EU Referendum), Rokia Traore was immense; Sharon Shannon, Blair Dunlop, Appleyard Road (gorgeous version of Losing My Religion)Rockingbirds, Fisherman's Friends , Larkin Poe, even Cyndi Lauper was surprising good, Time after Time great.
Non Music Highlights - firework display Wednesday evening above The Park. What views from there! Visited Strummerville by the campfire THursday night. Exploring the South East Corner and the site in general and chancing various other random bands and DJ's
Biggest disappointment - hearing the result of the Referendum from my Tent on Friday morning. My heart just sank....and then replaced with feelings of anger.
Anyway, all in all, had a great time. Now I'm in the mood for WOMAD

Welcome back DM; glad you weren't stuck for the 11/12 hours or more we were hearing about. You certainly made the most of your time there - great to read; thanks for reviewing. Do you think you'll go again (with earplugs)or try others you've not been to (as well as Womad, of course!)?

Thanks for taking the time to read guys
There are other more low key festivals that I would like to try out at some point down here in the south of England. Its trying to work out what I can realistically afford. I am thinking of missing WOMAD next year (I'll be there this!) to give me more options to discover other festivals. I am allowing myself two main festivals a year with the occasional day festival thrown in - I'm doing Pocklington in a few weeks (my mum has moved there .)
I would like to return to Glastonbury, possibly even next year. But doing both that and WOMAD in same year quite an outlay (financial and annual leave) which is part of the reason not doing Thursday at WOMAD this year.
I can't believe I will get mud like that again, apparently it was the worst seen in 9 years
