What an awful discovery! You'll have to make sure you reserve a table next to a TV in a welcoming restaurant, make sure it's tuned in to Eurovision, and stay there all evening!

Rendrags, I chatted with H last night about the Eurovision clash and we concluded that we would record it while we are away and watch it when we get back with a few beers and the commentary from this forum. We'll just have to double our contribution the following year to make up for this. We have a very long day on the Saturday; around 9 hours of walking inc two half day walking tours, and then have booked another where we have to be at the Vatican Museums at 7.50am the next morning - we're walking in for that too, so not the best days for a late night and a bit of a headache the next morning..... Will be looking forward to sharing in retrospect!

I think a number of countries in Africa, especially the Northern parts - i.e. Egypt, Morocco etc are technically eligible to compete although they don't seem to take up the offer. I'm pretty sure it came up on a question on Pointless once.
Then there's Israel. And Australia last year. Not quite sure where Europe starts and ends these days

Central Rome & Vatican are very compact and the best way is walking, which is what we did. One good thing we happened upon by accident and was a bit of a lifesaver, is the Hop on Hop Off Cruise, a ticket lasts 24 hours (effectifly 2 days if you buy it late afternoon, don't buy it in advance or you may waste some of your 24 hours). it's a half hourly service with stops to hop on or off along the Tiber, perfect after a morning walking around the Vatican, hop on a boat for a sit down and watch Rome float by, hop off at The Jewish Quarter for lunch. www.city-discovery.com/rome/tour.php?id=12192

Oooooooo - that sounds fab, S.C. - have made note; thank you! The link isn't working for me, but I'll find it. When were you there? I haven't spent more than 30 mins on Italian language and wonder how much I'll need! Rick Stein's prog next Friday evening is from Reykjavik; I'll be watching that one and suggest it may be of interest as you may wish to have some ideas as to what is available if you're going to be there a while! Where were we ..ah, yes, Romania; well I had them as joint second in my placings of Eurovision 2013 - a turnaround from second last in 2012!

I haven't spent more than 30 mins on Italian language and wonder how much I'll need! We went beginning of Oct last year, for a weekend, flew out Friday morning came home Monday, so only 2 full days. Everyone spoke English and were extremely friendly. There are reports of street crime so when in crowded places or around the train station keep your handbag done up, under your arm and between you and "H". We never had any trouble nor did we hear of any, just take normal city care. Details of the cruise are easy enough to find if you google "Hop on Hop off Cruise Rome" One end of the Cruise (only two stops) is just across the bridge at Castel Sant'Angelo, so right by the Vatican. As you walk towards the bridge "Street Sellers" will ask you to buy cruise tickets and point you in the direction of the landing point. You would be very hard pressed not to be pestered by them, but they in no way do the hard sell on you, so you should easily get a couple of tickets (£15.00 each). Within the 24 hours you can use the boat as many times as you want, stops running at 19:00 I think.

I haven't watched it since the 70's and don't intend to start now, although I do know people who have Eurovision parties who seem to have fun.

PD, if you find your intentions being swayed by curiosity, please don't go in to Eurovision sober........that'll utterly ruin any chance of enjoyment! DT, tek crampons; thems cobbles ah trech'rous skiddy in t' snow. Theakston's XB should do t' trick. Tuppence! Lucky beggers! Tha's rightly gen'rous... farthin' more likely in my day..... enjoy t' views; tek a brolly!
