I grew up with an intense dislike of jazz, as all I knew was the stuff my Dad used to listen to, such as Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen and Acker Bilk. Then I got into jazz rock in the 70's with the likes of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Chick Corea, and from there developed a liking of other areas of jazz. Some of my favourite Womad acts have jazz elements - e.g Portico Quartet, the Ethio-jazz of Dub Colossus and Mulatu Astatke. Womad usually puts on a smattering of acts which could be called jazz, and for me they pitch it about right. This year announced so are Sons of Kehmet and Ibrahim Maalouf. Mmmm, nice!

Oh my word, I grew up like that too. But I had a secret liking for Dutch Swing College Band, don't tell anyone ;-) Now trawling through the muddy waters of early memory, I remember jumping on the sofa to the likes of Firehouse Five Plus Two ( I liked it cos it had a fire engine bell) and the Mississippi Jug Blowers (?) and snippets of who knows what ...what you doin there Pinetop...oh i's just thinking about all them piano players makin big money on them there records...well why don't you play on them records...well, I b'leeve that's what I'll do. I'll start rehearsing right now.....Yep, that has a place in my heart forever :-)

Del first jazz band was Living colour, Cal was a bit more old school and was lucky enough to hear Miles Davies play at the north sea jazz festival, she couldn't get into the tent he was play but sat outside mesmerised

Well, the result came out remarkably Neutral/Positive. I thought it would be more negative, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering so much music coming from Africa/Latin countries and dance is so influenced by Jazz. Nice result
