Charlton Park, 2018 will be my 34th UK WOMAD. Imo I reckon that we, as a nation have passed the Golden Age of WOMAD (& festivals in general). Festivals are still enjoyable but lack that certain frisson that always produced the piloerection of anarchic excitement that festivals exuded in the 70's, 80's & 90's
I personally feel that WOMAD UK reached peak enjoyment in the early '90's, when located at Carlyon Bay; the site, the stages, the line-ups, the atmosphere, the ambience, the nudity, the limited size of the crowd and the easy availability of drugs all coalesced to form a party of epic wonderfulness. This was a time when WOMAD was a world of music, art and dance; no science pavilion and no spa. When festivals were still (just about) the invention and preserve of 'alternative society' and not overwhelmed by the middle class of 'straights' and mainstream media' Going back to basics would, I think, be a vast improvement
What do all youse think innit?

Forwards ever Backwards Never as Prince Jazzbo said.
Where else is there this variety of music, nowhere . You don't want to be any where else next weekend, my first was 88 Bracknall Clips on Youtube of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. its just different.

Yes, festivals are not edgy, anymore. I used to called a hippy for going to them. Now its 'cool' to 'do' a festival, but the same is true of music gigs, huge formulaic mega gigs with rip off prices. I saw all the big names in the 70s at The Winter Gardens in Bournemouth, almost touched Bowie. But Globestyle is right, Womad is still the best variety even though its all changed, no pop up sellers, no drumming, no chai chapel, arboretum is not a place of calm any more, its a festival extension but Womad is still great. Small local festivals + Womad for me.

Yes desert traveller I miss that hubbub which emanated from the chai chapel into the small hours. It was magical. I do have video of the final years of chai chapel. I miss the fudge seller and camp site impromptu performers. Halcyon days. Not to mention camp site washbasins (did I ever mention that🤔) and communal showers. Do we still have a vodka jelly man? I don’t miss the tent robbers though. Maybe I should post my chai chapel videos on yt. Having said all this, I do go to other festivals and realise why Womad is no1. Other festivals seem amateur by comparison especially in the music department. See ya Thursday 🤩

I'm finding I'm not in the slightest bit missing not going to WOMAD this year. Still planning to do festivals but maybe my WOMAD mojo is slipping.FirstI've missed in 6 years and only 3rd since I started in 2000.
Can't really comment on what festivals were like way back in the day as that WOMAD.
Ale choice is certainly better then it was I'm 2000. Cambridge being the exception.

I saw Fairground Attraction, Drummers of Burundi. Not much seems to be said about the Morecambe Womads. I suppose it was off most people’s radar.

I was working at a small festival last week and yea the washbasins were there and discharging directly to a ditch- opps! At the moment there are too many events and some are rubbish, both big and small, Glasto has significant issues every year but some small festivals eg PurbecK folk are a joy. SC AND I attended Wickham a few years ago as customers, it looked like it was designed as A 6TH FORM PROJECT! It is the national blame culture that's at the root. No one will say, oh it was ok, no it isnt any more - vodka jelly man - breach of alcohol licence and main risk - risk of harm to children. Chai chapel drumming - poss noise nuisance, wash basins cost of collecting and disposing of extra water. Itinerant sellers like the steam candle boats made from tin cans- risk of injury. The public dont want the festival hot drummer describes, they even want bog paper and hand gel at every loo, every time. The whole country needs a big chill pill.

I recently read Thomas Brooman’s book ‘My Festival Romance’ and there’s an appendix listing all the festivals.

Looking on Wikipedia it's a bit confused, it says Womad Reading was from 1990 to 2006 and Morecambe Womad 1989 to 1997, is that true, that from 1990 to 1997 Womads were at both Reading and Morecambe?

I went to the Womad Morecambe in 89 , it was on for a couple of years before settling in Reading
i remember staying in the Dome nightclub all day to be able to see Lee Perry backed by a Swiss Punk Band
2018 First time ive seen Class A being snorted openly in the d & b tent , and pills passed around in Big Red, if that continues i dont think youll have to worry where its being held.
The license will be revoked.

Not so long ago, stewards seemed prepared to wade in and pull out any one they suspected of taking drugs in the audience. It then became blatant that people were dealing. Now seems to be even more blatant use all round with security seemingly not bothered and not sure @bout the police attitude. If this does lead to the licence being revoked then it is only Womads own fault. Why oh why do they have a prominent ‘search’ on one gate yet if you come in though any other entrance (such as park and camp) there was probably no risk of being stopped at all.
