Here in Jockland the SNP have a PR disaster when the chief medical officer was sacked for not following her own guidance to stay home. The SNP tried to use a personal please by mrs sturgeon to calm the storm but when that didn't work mrs sturgeon told the chief medical officers she had to resign and after a long discussion she agreed to resign. Yeah, Chicago's Mayer did a big blunder, not only by getting a haircut, but being dumb enough to pose for selfies, which of course the hair stylist posted on social media. No physical distancing in the photo Up to that point she'd been doing a pretty good job, but this do as I say, not as I do attitude has got to go. Seriously, now is not the time to worry about haircuts. Wish it was, my niece is a hair stylist and bartender. Not a great time for her right now. As Boris J your side of he pond is finding out, the virus doesn't care who you are. Sure, the wealthy and politicians have the upper hand with access to the best health care, but that's not always enough.

OK, the conservatives always have to out due the more liberal politicians. He's listed as independent, but his talking points point right. I'm not buying he didn't know where his wife was at 0100 in the morning while Illinois is practicing a stay at home order. Probably more like, go have fun, but I can't go because bad as it would look for you to get caught, it would be far worse for me. I'm not buying she was actually treated the same as a regular citizen would be either, though perhaps she will be fined the same for appearances sake. Which is a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct. From another news source, it seems the bar owner got busted for breaking the stay at home order and for an outstanding warrant misdemeanor charge of domestic battery with bodily harm. If the mayor was serious about bars opening he would have taken any that got caught opening liquor license away, even if only temporarily. OK, wondering if he staged this, because would you let your wife go to something like this on a weekend you've told your police to crack down on that kind of activity? However, this explains why the more rural communities are likely to keep Covid-19 alive and get hit hard. Too many not taking this serious at all, listening to right wing radio stations that keep saying things like the cure (people staying at home and slowing, stopping the spread) is worse than the disease (any negative effects on the economy.) Why do we call conservatives the right when they are so often wrong? wgntv.com/news/coronavirus/wife-of-illinois-mayor-cited-for-violating-stay-at-home-order-after-attending-bar-party-police-say/

This, before the last of the 6 nations matches and before Cheltenham Festival. However, Scotland’s chief medical officer has insisted scientific evidence suggests mass gatherings, particularly those held outdoors, are unlikely to result in the virus being passed on. Speaking at Murrayfield ahead of Scotland’s Six Nations clash with France, Dr Catherine Calderwood said: “I’ve looked at the scientific evidence very carefully, and what’s emerging is that there’s actually very little impact on virus spread from mass gatherings, particularly if they are in the open air. This is not a risk to the Scottish population in hosting this match”

Yes, well, the USA is going to look worse than a lot of countries, because of how large our population is. It is going to be worse, because depending on whether your state is conservative or progressive, with few exceptions makes a big difference in how it's handled. We are not a small island, so it's harder to control population movement. The Progressive states have been far more proactive and our efforts are showing. And as much of Europe did, we waited far too long before doing anything.
New York's larger problem was it is the largest hub for international travel. Even if people are only there for connecting flights, they still had a chance to give it to someone who worked at the airport, who then took it everywhere they went on the way home. Which is why California got hit early as well, where Chicago also with a huge international airport and a smaller one, is catching up.
Frankly, if the world had worried less about economy, the whole world would have shut down when China did. That would have made a far larger difference in the fight against this disease. Sadly, people and especially leaders who are largely bought and paid for by mega corporations, needed people to die before taking an economic hit. Ironically, by going after the after Christmas gift card sales they would have lost, now they are losing far more money than they would have if we had all shut down, even if we had done it in January. February is not a big shopping month and is a mostly inventory month, so the economic hit would have been far less. Would we have been able to fully go back to normal by now? Probably not, but we may have been able to have a slightly more normal Easter. More importantly a lot of the people that have died so far, may never have become ill. Sadly, we need the catastrophe to be full in our faces before we are willing to act.
It's mind boggling really, that rich corporations and CEO's that already have more money in the bank than they know what to do with, or that we will ever really know they have, but couldn't come to grips that maybe this time it was there turn to tighten their belts and reward their workers by putting the health and ability for workers to pay their bills first. A move that would have reaped them far better financial rewards than stockpiling and hording money every has. The greater irony is, those very same rich people wouldn't have noticed a difference in their lifestyle if they took no money from those companies for one year, yet some of the rest of us stand a good chance of losing their homes, cars, jobs, etc. Of course, that's the really sad thing, is the rich banks, real estate developers and investors stand a chance of making millions, if not billions or more on the pain of the workers...again.
Greed is not good.

Oh, the other interesting thing I find watching the news, is the reluctance to mention that one of the factors in why immigrant and minority populations have been hit the hardest is the fact that they are more likely to be cigarette smokers than other populations.

Where I struggle is how, once you have lockdown do you unlock? Ok the virus reduces, so you release the people, but it only takes one person to have the virus and BOOM, it’s back again! So you stay in lockdown until we can inoculate? 18 months? Two years? Who knows, but how can any country continue to function, provide food, clean water, power, Health Service's, Education? Social Services, etc without taxation or income. The only thing that will give good answers will be hindsight, and frankly hindsight is pretty useless.

It is how the Far East countries have overcome the crisis, keeping death rates below European and US levels and will counter potential reinfection from foreign travel. guess will get to a manageable level if all countries work together, including funding to help manage the crisis in Africa and other locations where health services are not so well developed or appropriately funded. it is also what the uk government was saying would be their approach, until we all realised that they were talking out the back of their trousers and the resources to accomplish this simply did not exist.

I wrote a long rant, but decided not to, this time. In a nut shell, it's too bad that the people that have been voted into the positions that demand the most trust from their citizenry are unwilling to accept that responsibility and instead act like toddlers and perhaps rise to 12yo's, "Not my fault." I didn't start it. "It was his/her fault." I know you are, but what am I...and on and on. Sadly, especially on the so called conservative side with themselves as the exception, they see no problem with poor people, old people, immigrants, dying. No problem at all. Unless it's themselves of course.
Sadly, with your Boris, I foresee he will learn no compassion for others from his experience, but he will monopolize his hospitalization with Covid1-9 as an opportunity to use it to any advantage he feels he can in an attempt for more compassion for his poor baby self and use it to help his poor, actually, extremely wealthy business buddies who without tax payer help won't get the bonuses they have become accustomed to. Making no attempt to point out between their companies offshore accounts stockpiling trillions of dollars, to the point that most of the corporations saying they need the most, need the least to be sure.
Sigh, OK, ended up with only a slightly shorter rant. Just tired of talking to old friends I haven't talked to in a long time, I can't understand how they can support any conservative party. Especially, as that is the party that has caused them the most hardship in their lives. I just don't get it. I just don't get it at all.

Well said Zenrider, thanks... I don't get it either... they've been brainwashed by the media and general culture that the right is right and the left is for do-gooders and scroungers.

Well said Zenrider, thanks... I don't get it either... they've been brainwashed by the media and general culture that the right is right and the left is for do-gooders and scroungers. Brainwashed by the media, but then complain about all the left wing media. Apparently, any source that tries to report facts that contradict their supreme leader makes them left wing. Is it wrong that I love his frustration when confronted with the fact that everyone isn't buying his crap? Something that needs to be repeatedly brought to Trump's attention everyday at these rally briefings. Paraphrasing, "I asked you about February, not January." and him trying to lead to where he wanted to be and her not giving into his lying ass. He may not accept it, but it's good when he's reminded he's not as smart as he thinks he is, if even only for a short bit.
