What really gets to me is the complete absence of any strategic intent at all. There are basically two choices, either enforce mask wearing/hand washing/social distancing but otherwise let people get on with it and let the virus run its course, or lockdown fully for a relatively short time and try to eradicate it. Sweden opted for something close to the former so no-one has had to endure the trauma of lockdown, NZ opted for the latter, have very few cases/deaths and life is back to normal. Who the f..k knows what we were trying to do?! In practice we have suffered an extremely high case/death count and all the damage that lockdowns do. If Johnson was CEO of UK plc, he'd have been fired months ago. As it is, it seems that being a bumbling amateur is just fine if you are PM of the UK. the interesting and sad thing about Sweden is that they issues guidance which people followed, however they have had to start to impose forms of regulations due to public complacency for some people Boris Johnson has a great job, mainly tory donors who made a mint out of supplying PPE Sadly the politician on the UK would never agree to the Covid19 response to be handled by a cross part group, medical professionals and scientist

Over 100,000 deaths in the UK.
Other estimates put the figure at over 120,000.
Very grim news.
Sadly 4 sets of rules made up by 4 sets of politicians most of whom decided to playing politics instead of work together have led to this.
Divide we fall, united we stand tall.....

Sadly, more than restrictions etc., all people had to do was use a bit of common sense. Instead, it became I'm gonna do what I want, because I want. Frankly, I really don't blame the Earth for trying to get rid of us. I just hope it's not before I get to go to WOMAD in 2022. and for whatever problem inside my head, The Shetland Folk Festival in 2023. Hey, if I'm gonna dish out a lot of cash for it, maybe someone can join me there. They don't have camping per say, but they try to have somewhere people with camper vans can use. I'll be in a hotel. Too hard to drive to the Shetlands from Illinois.

That all depends on how much air you put in your tyres.

That all depends on how much air you put in your tyres. Not sure I'd want to cross the Atlantic in even one of those amphibious cars. Looking forward to 2022 when I will be catching up on everything I haven't done in the last couple of years.

A much smaller festival I normally attend a week before Womad has sadly been cancelled. In short, safety is more important (quite rightly). Still hopeful for Womad but think we will have the inevitable bad news next month.

Part of the gradual de-civalisation of this country in the last 30 years is the lessening of the importance of the arts. The pandemic has hopefully causes politicians to re consider how important the arts and the outdoors are to mental wellbeing. May be we should invite all the world leaders, with the exception of Jacinda Arden who can be substituted for Trump, as they will be excempt from the quarantine, then WOMAD will become World of Madmen and Despots. As we enter we are given random masks of leaders, imagine getting a Johnson mask, just bumbling around confused, or Trump shouting 'fake music' thousands of orange faces.....

We are truly in a woeful state DT... the last 10 years have been particularly damaging, courtesy of the Tories - why do so many still vote for them? It seems there's always been an unquestioning and insatiable appetite for rabid right wing propaganda... it's an easy narrative to spin as long as there are enough idiots. I guess that's why there are way more right wing newspapers than centre/left of centre.

You may have lunatic fringe over there as well, but ours are so delusional some believe Trump is going to be inaugurated the 19th president on March 4th. Trump's crazy enough to stage such an event, just to keep things stirred up. I have to wonder how many Republican Governors will try to go along with it. OK, and for how long, after all, he has no control of the federal dollars they need and want.
Apparently, there is a group, of the Confederate sort, that believe all the presidents after 1871 are illegitimate, until Trump this year. Apparently, his first 4 years didn't count? OK, and the fact that it's been 150 years since 1871 and we have definitely had presidents the whole time. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to fall for stuff like this nonsense? No wonder, even Trump considers them suckers and fools, but he'll pander to them, especially as long as they keep sending him money.

Shame on the Republican Senate members who failed to convict Trump purely on political grounds. Is that any comfort to families of those who died, to senators and representatives who feared for their lives and even the saps who heeded the call from ‘their president’ and lives are now ruined after he did nothing to call them back. Greatest ire for Mitch McConnell who clearly stated Trump was guilty but then voted to clear him. Just curious, why have they picked the 4th March as the day to announce a sham inauguration?

Before trains, highways, planes, etc. It took longer to tally up the votes, so March 4th was the inauguration day a long time ago.
Since Trump's idiots are, well idiots living in a past that never really existed, they've chosen that day to be disappointed, again.
