A Womad 2021 thread seems conspicuous by its absence...So I thought I would start one.
What do people think? Is it going to happen? Has anyone been brave enough to get tickets yet? Are there any rumours about who might be performing?
It seems so different to the reality of the last year it's quite difficult to imagine Womad 2021, and even more so to get excited. but you need some hope to keep you smiling.

Well, Glastonbury has been cancelled but that may be because it was too early and too big to go ahead safely. It may be possible that Womad goes ahead, if the vaccine rollout is ramped up, combined with additional track and trace and hygiene procedures in place. Well, that is the hope. Guess most people have got tickets, having our Womad 2020 rolled forward to this year. Think it was announced that many of the 2020 artists had confirmed for 2021 instead (Covid and Brexit permitting). Pretty sure the Flaming Lips confirmed they would attend and, all being well, I will be singing along to ‘Do You Realise’ at the top of my voice to remember the family members and colleagues we sadly lost last year.

The existing strains of virus should be declining by July and many like me should have had both jabs by then, BUT will mass gatherings be permitted anywhere in 2021? Would moving Womad to end of August (but not clashing with similar festivals) help? Pubs will be open by then. Huge demand for a near normal summer. Everyone who can will want to be out somewhere, anywhere. Any festival will sell out immediately regardless of who is playing.
Who can come and what quarantine across borders would they need, both ways. Masks would be required I'm sure, I'm thinking of a steam punk theme incorporating a ridiculous mask. As someone involved with control of the virus & event safety if I was doing the event risk assessment I'd have significant concerns mainly around ventilation & social distancing which is the most effective Covid control. Masks are limited & have to be FFP3 to be any good with no exhalation vent- that wont happen. May be no big tents. Can we sing and shout, hug? I am hoping for 2021 but not hopeful- I bought the insurance with the ticket this year, cost less than £10.
Lets keep hope in there anyway!

Looks like travellers will need to pay for 2 weeks quarantine when they arrive in the UK.
Not sure how many bands/artists will want to or be able to do this.
UKOMAD
Or
EOMAD
If SNP and the Welsh close the borders.

The National Eisteddfod scheduled for just after Womad was cancelled yesterday, after talks with the Welsh Government. This was an event that could have been scaled back and socially distanced but decision to cancel, does not bode well for other summer festivals. All that before considering allowing international artists to come into the country to play, just cannot see it happening! I would be happy with CalnDels suggestion of UKMAD or even Malmsmad, desperate for any festival experience but being less than an hour away and I would think twice about travelling further afield. Sorry If sounding down about this but was not a good day yesterday coming to terms with cancellations (capped with an anger at a local ‘spa’ shop posting messages that they will open on the 30th jan in defiance of the law, 100,000 deaths, probably 400,000 with long term serious health issues and there is a National rebellion to open up pubs and shops which will only lead to another spike and misery for all of us). Trying to be more optimistic.

Wales has always taken a strict view of Covid laws, but the issue of travel across international borders must be significant; who will be able to be there/ want to be there. Thinking of the land, it may be they cannot delay Womad because of the need to plant/ grow crops immediately after the event has left the site. We have a pretty high infection/ death rate. NZ has shut it's borders for up to a year, we have taken a year to partly close ours, Chelsea flower show delayed until Autumn, the new variants of SARs COV2 may need to be kept in check so the existing vaccine was never going to be a get out of jail card. The lock down will need to be released but with conditions, one may be no mass gatherings, or ok if totally outside with strict controls in place. My view is similar to Mikey, yes, I really want it to happen but with my Public Health and event safety hats on its probably a no.
Mikey report the spa to your council's env health team, they have the same powers as the Police and are responsible for enforcement in premises like Spas. They have the power to immediately close them under HSW law, with injunctions if they don't comply.

Already on the case with local police and Covid support officers. Obviously they cannot tell me what may happen although they are taking the Sensible step of trying to talk to the business owner first.

When there is deliberate non compliance I sometimes I think the graduated enforcement approach is overrated. The spas know full well what is expected of them and have known since last March. The council wont let it go, they will intervene. Spoke at length to my GP last night, we both agreed the jab will not bring things to an end. South Africa has been late to vaccine table and few have been vaccinated, they are still arguing over prices. This must apply to many countries and some will be those where we normally expect artists to travel from to perform. Expect it not to happen, be grateful if it does, don't expect it to be the same. Start working on a funky design of mask to wear over your medical mask!

The vaccine will only increase your chances of not fall ill, you will still be able to catch it and spread it.
Continue to stay safe.

WOMAD Chili was cancelled, again, this year. There's only a one minute highlight video in the link, but if you go to the video in YouTube, there are some interesting videos to be found by the poster of the video. petergabriel.com/news/womad-chile-2/Like this one: And this one:
