They are also preparing for the 3rd wave at the end of the summer, so autumn and winter festivals may suffer

Lots of folk selling tickets they (apparently) can’t use on fb Womad community page. Maybe we’ll have Charlton Park to ourselves. I’ve had my second jab. Surely the vaccine will have some positive effect on herd ( or heard🤪) immunity. If numbers are down I’ll see it’s my duty to buy a big round.

A festival is as safe as you want to make it, there is no one this year where I feel I have to be at the front of the crowd. My second jab will be in the next 3 weeks.
Despite full 2 vaccine 'protection', if I was younger I wouldnt be jammed in at 6/ metre singing /shouting or jumping in a mosh pit- the risks, although remote, are too great. I still intend having a great time at Womad 2021 though.

Fingers crossed. Being an outdoor festival helps WOMAD, but nothing is written in stone. I think it's going to happen. Next year is probably going to be insane with people, but I'm planning to come anyway. 🤓

Reports that festival organisers want the UK government to provide insurance to cover any costs if they are cancelled.

Sadly Love Supreme, Festival of Jazz, Funk and Soul have just announced 2021 isn't happening
"Over the past few months we have been exploring all avenues to make Love Supreme happen this summer. We are devastated that we will not be able to go ahead in 2021.
We pride ourselves on bringing you a world class line up year after year, uniting incredible artists from around the globe in the beautiful surroundings of Glynde Place. However, due to international travel restrictions and ongoing factors surrounding COVID-19, it will still not be possible this summer. We simply would not be able to deliver a Love Supreme that lives up to our own and your expectations.
Love Supreme will now take place from 1st to 3rd July 2022.
We are working on rolling over our line up to next year and, as well as adding new names, will be sharing artist announcements and plans with you as we look forward to a bigger and better return in 2022.
Tickets for 2021 will automatically transfer to the new dates and you will be contacted directly by your ticket agent with more details, including our refund process, in the next 24 hours.
We are so grateful to everyone who has kept their tickets with us over the past year. You are the heart and soul of Love Supreme and we can’t wait to see you in Glynde in 2022.
Take care and stay safe. Team Love Supreme"

Womad are due to announce the second batch of artists in a couple of weeks' time. I'd guess that if this happens then it will look like Womad will actually go ahead, if allowed to, whilst a host of other festivals have had to cancel.
I haven't looked too closely at the artists from the first announcement, as I don't want to get too excited in case it doesn't go ahead, but there are a few familiar names I'm happy to see again. Also looking forward to seeing The Comet is Coming. They'll be a blast. Though I may have to resign myself to watching from a distance rather than loon dancing doon the front.

Fingers crossed for CP2021... but given that the basic logistics and risk will be similar for all festivals, why are some going ahead while others are cancelled? Without any government insurance scheme, is it just down to the organisers on whether to take the gamble?

I have no feel for the financial exposure but possibly Peter Gabriel has agreed to underwrite any losses? Alternatively, what's the worst that can happen? The festival is cancelled, Womad (the legal entity that supports the festival) goes bust, suppliers/musicians don't get paid, and NewWomadCo runs the festival next year. Not ideal, but perhaps considered a risk worth running?

Not ideal, but perhaps considered a risk worth running? With a big loss of goodwill with the traders and supplier who are critical to the festival. And also potential loss of trust from us, the punters. at the end of the day, I just feel that Womad are taking the right approach ensuring all eventualities are covered, working closely with local health board to ensure risks to health are minimal. Additionally, they have an audience that are largely going to follow the rules, wearing masks, taking tests, abiding to the results and socially distancing - how many other festivals can say the same. I also wonder how involved Green Peace and Oxfam are in these decisions, knowing how much they are relied on to provide stewarding etc (and responsible for health and safety of their own volunteers) and must be eager to raise awareness and funds.

Not ideal, but perhaps considered a risk worth running? I feel some of it has to do with the decision to involve mostly musicians residing in the UK. As long as there is no major outbreak before WOMAD I can see it going ahead. Perhaps Peter is being optimistic, and I'm pretty sure, he's long used his own money to prop up WOMAD.
