Simon Emmerson of the Afro Celt Sound System and the Imagined Village has died. Eliza Carthy just forwarded a statement on Facebook. I was a huge fan of the Afro Celts, in particular their first three albums. Some of my very best gig memories were with them. I also distinctly remember when I first heard them. I was staying in a hostel in Dingle, Co. Kerry, and someone there had their debut album on cassette. I was blown away by this fusion of musical styles. Statement says that he died on 13 March after a prolonged illness. There will be a tribute memorial concert later on this year. I am sure he will be hugely missed by many Womad goers.

I'm selective on who is on my Facebook freinds list, he was one, like you I have just heard. Like you some of best gig memories were with them, last spoke to him a few months ago when he did An Imagined Village gig down in Bridport. I'm am so upset
As he would have said 'Love and light to you all.'

I wish I hadn't just checked in and read this sad, totally out of the blue news. I too loved the Afro Celt Sound Sytem throughout their career, but especially the early days of the mid-90s when womad was still new to me. Last saw them 2018 at CP and they still had such energy and fluency between them on stage. The Imagined Village was also a fantastic Womad highlight. Just so sorry to hear this.

Sad to hear this. I haven't listened to all of their music, but have liked what I've heard.

Horrible news.
He was also a member of Weekend, another of my favourite bands back in the day. Drum Beat for Baby was and remains absolutely gorgeous.
