Very very sad news, but he brought great joy, hope and truth to the world. A great gift to us all ❤️ He sang with his heart on his sleave, he sang honestly rather than what people or fashion wanted to hear, a rare genius ❤️ The world is richer for his visit here ❤️ BBC News - Shane MacGowan: Pogues singer dies aged 65 www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-67546785

Indeed SC... someone just blurted out the news at work today, amongst a crowd of just one real fan. It was a terrible moment, trying not to get upset in front of them. It was the news I always dreaded, but almost believed would not come anytime soon. I will treasure everything... including the long-empty bottle of Stella he very kindly bought me after I bumped into him in London, offered to get him a drink and instantly realised I could not afford his triple martini plus whatever his drinking buddy wanted. I was drunk and I felt so stupid, but lucky to have had that encounter. That was the late 90s at a book launch party for a new biography of Charles Bukowski.. I always wondered if Shane liked Bukowski... and there he was... battered copy of Bukowski's Last Night of the Earth in his hands... thanks for everything Shane.

Great story Beef:)
I remember listening to Pogue Mahone a long time ago, and being really annoyed that they were forced to change their name...
I also remember watching them at the Clarendon in the early 1980's and suddenly noticing that I was standing next to Elvis Costello.
RIP Shane, you were always the real deal, and you won't be forgotten.

There was a very good tribute to the great man on BBC Radio Ulster on the Ralph McLean show.

This news obviously brought back memories of his performance with the Sharon Shannon band at WOMAD 2008 (i think). Boy that was a hot one. And he blasted out his hit of course. Myself and my mate were wondering if he would and when a female singer joined him on stage and then then hearing the very first note......
Off course he was so much more than that single but no doubt helped increase his following. We need more like him. An original and authentic.
