There are a lot of good films on Netflix I cannot see as I do not have a subscription for it. Will need to consider forking out at some some time. It was good though when some of their films came out on limited cinema release. managed to see The Two Popes and The Irishman in Monmouth, the latter two nights before the first lockdown came in (those were the days, you could sit In A room with loads of others and watch a good film together). I will be watching ‘I care a lot’ tonight on Prime. Goods reviews though so will let you all know how it was.

That's what drives me nuts these days - you need all these damned subscriptions to watch this and watch that... and people complain about the BBC license fee! That's all I will pay for. www.theguardian.com/media/2021/feb/15/bbc-faces-oblivion-despite-tv-drama-golden-age-says-russell-t-davies

Oh come on, it is respected for impartial and accurate news around the world! It is criticised by conservatives for being too left wing and by the left for being too right wing, to me that means they have got it spot on! Even though I watch fewer bbc programmes at the moment (but what they make and I watch is of great quality) and frustrated by dumbing down of the tv breakfast news (Dan Walker, an absolute joke calling him a serious news presenter). I am happy to pay my licence fee (and by DD I do not even notice the payments going out). I do however get full moneys worth from the radio programmes, comedy, drama and news.

The BBC are on a hiding to nothing on impartiality... trying to please everyone by somehow being "neutral"... interesting article on who and what are squeezing the BBC into such an impossible shape - www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/oct/07/bbc-independence-corporation-news-agenda-media-oligarchs

... because the mentality of the right is basically nuts? I don't really understand it further than that.

There argument is to lift a ban, because there haven't been any attacks with 50 caliber weapons in a long time. So, in lifting the ban, it tells me they want to have crimes with 50 caliber weapons?

I’m fortunate to live where people don’t know what 50 caliber or calibre weapons are. And I don’t want to know. 😜

Why on earth anyone would oppose a 50 cal guns being banned is beyond me.

One of the good things about Mubi is they occasionally have interviews with the director. So I watched a Georgian movie called Beginning earlier today, and although the movie didn't totally enthral me on first viewing, hearing the director (Dea K) speak so beautifully about it afterwards was really illuminating and opened my eyes to a lot that I had missed. So as an overall experience, I would really recommend it.

I watched a movie called Toni Erdmann last night. The funniest yet most excruciating to watch film that I have ever seen. It absolutely nails the experience of being a global business consultant, something movies never get close to. Everything that happens in the movie would play out exactly that way in real life. The casting of the leads is inspired, Ines the lead consultant being amphibious, totally sexless and yet with a vulnerable childlike quality. It should be required viewing before anyone considers working for McKinsey or similar - that's the world you are entering, it is inhuman and will destroy you as a human being. Just incredible filmmaking.

Hi, I'm back on this thread again...
This time to recommend Beanpole. Much of Russian cinema is dark on the outside and dark on the inside. It is often captivating because it goes in so deep and you just can't turn away, even though you might want to. This is a superb film about two girls who have been emotionally destroyed by war. It is beautifully shot and will touch anyone who still retains even a semblance of humanity.

We watched "he dreams of giants" on the BFI player, a fascinating documentary about Terry Gillian filming The who killed Don Quixote and the toll the 40 project took out of him.
