Apparently, Peter has been getting a lot of kickback from promoting this contest. Not sure I'd add my name to a list that has Elon, my spaceships often blow up, Musk on it. Sometimes, I worry that Pete has been in the rich bubble so long, sometimes he forgets how to relate to the rest of us. petergabriel.com/news/ai-competition-statement/ Hasn't he always been fairly 'elite' (Charterhouse, marrying the daughter of Baron Moore of Wolvercote etc)? But he's not even right on this - apart from the potential for fakeness and immitation, the immediate problem (legal and moral) is about copying and using another's work without permission, regardless of whether there will be financial gain for the copier. PG just loves to be at the front with new technology (although this isn't really even the front with AI anymore) so I guess he couldn't resist something like this. Having all these tech gurus as contacts must be a bad influence on him... go on Pete, it's going to be great! And... apparently he's joining the private jet club for getting around on the tour... and eats a lot of baked beans - that I can join him in - bet he doesn't like being called "Genesis star" though... www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/genesis-star-peter-gabriel-eats-27389375

Grief... those shrieking so-called "fricking" and "oh-my-god" hosts...had to skip them after 30 seconds... were they AI-generated.. they didn't seem real. And then watched a few seconds of a couple of tracks... AI generated videos all seem to have the same look and style - everything is moving and constantly morphing into the next frame. It's like someone recorded their nightmares onto an old VHS and plays it fast-forward on a blurry TV. Presumably everything that appears has been harvested from existing, human-created art and images, without credit or permission? Call me old fashioned... but I just don't see the point of this... a few people are no doubt going to be making a fortune out of AI... but what's in it for anyone else? Enthusiasts of AI seem like they are in thrall to a cult "of the fricking future" to me. Comparisons with previous revolutionary technologies are premature and blinded by faith in the concept of technological progress = societal progress. Any good, if there is any, will be incidental and accidental.

I'd say they are going for the young crowd that needs someone to act over the top excited about what they are trying to sell. I do understand how AI can be used for good things, like aiding medical research. Sadly, humans will want to abuse it. Glad I should be retired by the time it gets too invasive in the work place.

I zipped through it - saw bits and pieces. PG seemed a bit weary and going through the motions... maybe he wished he'd not bothered with it after all? If it (AI) does turn out to be as powerful and omnipotent as feared, I feel very sorry for those who will have to live with it, even if it does have some potential positives. Another human created crisis... just what the world needs.

Seeing as PG made this a thing on his website, I hope this is the best place to post related stuff...? Interesting rebuttal of AI's abilities to replace human creativity; www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jun/12/lost-job-learn-code-ai-humans-skillsBut I suppose this is more about the future (but how far ahead... months, years, decades) in which AI is predicted to reach a level of all-encompassing ability which will surpass human beings' ability to control or understand it. And then what. More than copyright infringement and crappy music videos that's for sure.
