evening all here is a wee round up of some films from the Glasgow Film Festival
Peter Greenway's Elsenstein in Guanajuato tells Mr Greenway's take on the Russian director Sergei Elsenstein visit to Mexico and his discover of Mexican culture and his own sexual wakening. Wonderfully shot and mesmerizing but not for those of are offended by male nudity or naked wrestling
zootropolis, Disney's latest fable with all the usual Disney tricks and plot lines
The Colours of the Alphabet is a documentry about education in Zambia when English is the official language but outside of the major cities only 2 percent of the population speak English. Very thought provoking not just about language issues but also the erosion of cultures.
The Boy and Beast, an anime tale of orphan who stumbles upon an alternative world full of beast like humans who need to select a new leader. The story covers loss, friendship redemption and love. we enjoyed it and at time it was visually stunning
April and the Extraordinary World, this steam punk French animations tell the story of a family struggle to find a serum to cut everything. Very very funny and so well imagined.
Land of Mine, this film tell the story of a troop of German POW are forced to de-mine a beach on the west coast of Denmark. Based on real events this is not a easy film to watch as it so tense however it also show even in the brutality of war humanity is still the strongest force
The Green Room, a bloody tale of a punk band who agree to play one gig too many and end up fighting for their lives (the excellent soundtrack almost stole the show!)
The Wave, an excellent Norwegian disaster movie about a mountain side falling into a fjord (and the mountain in the film will on day fall into the fjord!)
The Fencer, and heart warming tale of a Estonian teacher who is try to escape his past in a small rural school but when he starts a fencing club he become a surrogate father to all the children and has to face the demons from his past
Marguerite, is a tail of honest verses love. A wealthy baroness is passionate about music and loves to sing but no one has the heart to tell her she can't sing! The screeching baroness is then asked to perform for the public.........................
Time Out of Mind, see Richard Gere play a homeless man slowly accepting the reality of his situation and brutality of being homeless. This not a easy watch as it is an honest portal of being homeless but it is expertly crafted and the performances by the cast a incredibly real.
