dakhabrakha have been a favourite of our since we first saw them preform at WOMAD in 2012
When they returned in 2014, Ukraine had just been invaded by Russia, Del noted that dakhabrakha had played the peace stage in Kiev so in an act of solidarity he decided to buy 50 small Ukrainian flags with intention of pass them out to the crowd at WOMAD before dakhabrakha played.
Del wasn't 100% if he would get into trouble for passing out the flags or get if the band would welcome the gesture.
By chance, when he and Brendan walked through the Siam tent as dakhabrakha did their sound check and with the help of a security guard Del passed one of the flags on the band which ended up one of the bands drums. When it was time to hand out the flags Del was a bit nervous about how the crowd would react to his offer of Ukrainian flags and the first person he asked refused one. He kept going and within minutes all the flags were gone and many people were asking him for more.
When dakhabrakha play the crowed went nuts, dakhabrakha look a bit stunned and it took a few songs for the band to respond and wave the flag Del had passed on. Their set was electric and a highlight of that years WOMAD.
It was a very emotional occasion for Del and Brendan, especially when a old Ukrainian lady in the crowed thanked him for passing out the flags.
And that where Del kind of left things until this year when it all went mental.
When dakhabrakha were announced for this years WOMAD they went straight to the top of our must see list. Del decided not to do the flag thing again as that time had passed.
Our first chance of seeing dakhabrakha was at the taste the world stage and we made sure we got a seat down the front. Right next to a man who had take one of Del's flags in 2012 (which he still has). dakhabrakha were on top form and funny too. During the QnA Del managed to ask a question about their last album. When he asked the question the cello player gave Del a long "you look familiar" stare. When they finished Del managed to blag his was back stage to get his Ukrainian flag from 2014 signed.
Marko, the male singer recognised Del right away, and was more than happy to sign Del's flag. Del discovered that a picture of the band playing WOMAD in 2014 and all the little Ukrainian flags being waved by the crowed had been picked up by the Ukrainian press and was on the front pages of all the news papers!!!! The rest of the band also singed Del's flag and the penny dropped the Cello player who told Del they had named him "Mr Magic". They also told him how much seeing the flags waving in the crowd had meant to them and some of the band had struggled to keep their composure during their set.
Del got a wave from the band during their sound check and they blasted the roof of the Siam tent. Cal had to move the edge of the Siam tent as it was so busy. She could help but notice the Siam tent was over following and everyone inside and around the tent were focused on the stage. When they had finish Del met a lady call Sarah who was standing net to him in 2014 and they have bumped into each other every WOMAD since. Del had been worried she wasn't at this years WOMAD so he was delighted she had been there.
After their set the dakhabrakha did a signing in the songlines tent and Del got some CD signed and the band gave Del a tshirt! Del then ended up talking to dakhabrakha manager and agent. Del asked about the band playing Scotland and he was told they were trying to sort something out as they wanted to play there.
A few days after WOMAD we had tickets to see dakhabrakha play in the lanes in Bristol, The lanes is a small venue so we knew it would be very different to see them in the Siam tent.
When dakhabrakha set up on stage they spotted us at the front and Del made sure he was wearing his dakhabrakha tshirt.
They played a slight different set and seeing them in a small venue meant we picked up on more of the joke and black humour.
at then end of the show Marko came to speak to us and he was surprise to see us as he though we lived in Glasgow. We explained we had stayed in Bristol as few extra days so we could see them play which he was touched by.
We also spoke to their manager again she told us the band may tour the uk next year and would be recording a new album soon. When Del joked about having to go to the Ukrainian to buy it she told us about a massive gig the band were due to play in Kiev in December and then added if we went to the gig she would put us on the guest list.
Since coming home, Del has bombarded Celtic Connection with messages about dakhabrakha and been told they are i"n talks ", exchanged a few emails with their agent (it looks like 2020 is out but 2021 might happen, finger crossed).
We have also booked flights to Kiev in December.........................................................
