Also Kendal Calling, scheduled for the weekend after Womad, has been cancelled. The lack of government help cited as the reason.

I wonder if there's a residual antipathy towards festivals and festival culture - remember Thatcher's war against "alternative lifestyles"? I know festivals are a lot more mainstream now, but I bet you'll not find many Tory voters going.

This is appalling and unnecessary, I feel so sorry for the organisers and punters although it may be our turn next. before it just seemed that cancellations were an unfortunate necessity. Now, it seems the government and their agencies are doing all they can to prohibit festivals going ahead.

Hello everyone not posted for ages but been catching up with the Forum, hoping to read some positive news from you all re Womad. I read today that The Open Golf Championship at Sandwich has been approved as a Government test event with 32,000 attending every day. I wonder if Peter G. has applied for this? or could apply maybe? if you are allowed to apply. Download Festival was an approved test event too.

Welcome back to the forum, hope you enjoy it enough to make a regular contribution.
Although I know nothing about it, it feels too late to apply for test event status now. I have no idea how download were selected? My football team (Cambridge United) did some trial matches with limited spectators a few months ago, and I got the impression they were approached, rather than the other way around.
Anyway the guys running Latitude were making positive noises earlier today so perhaps there is still hope.

With Kendal Calling going and Peter's words on Radio 4 I’m not very hopeful, but Melvin who runs Latitude has a bigger money pot and runs several huge events. I’m hoping that people who are respected like Peter and Melvin will be listened to at the 11th hour.
There is no stopping the Indian variant now, the only hope is mass vaccination levelling off the R rate. Pretty much all of the Womad customer profile except the children will have been double jabbed and by end of July even the over 18s should have had one dose. I envisage evidence of vaccination or negative test will be needed to gain access to Womad, I think that would be sensible. Covid will never go away, that’s a fact, 2 jabs are highly effective, a double jabbed person in a non crowded arena, in the summer in July & August; it’s really quite a low risk. I’d say lower than being inside a pub for 2 hours at the same table surrounded with others you dont know at adjacent tables. What will be different in 2022? Several variations down the line Vaccination and Covid will co-exist. Treatments will have advanced. Testing will be easier.
I see Eric Clapton, in addition to his racist rants has joined in the anti vax argument because he had a bad reaction and is now saying it might cause infertility- FFS!. I have 4 of his albums which I will be setting fire to tomorrow in the garden & asking leading Covid scientists to tell him how to play a guitar.

It looks like some sort of test and/or proof of vaccination will be required because ticket holders are now allowed to rollover their tickets to 2022 right up until the 2021 festival starts. Proof of double jabbing will effectively exclude younger adults who have made so many sacrifices to save the lives of the older generations so if Womad wants to be seen to be fair and wise, they will only ask for proof of single jabs backed up by a negative test. They could, of course, take the cynical option and blame HMG for Boomer only entrance requirements but this would be short-sighted and ultimately kill off the festival.

Truck Festival gone today and 60,000 allowed into Wembley Sport is definitely being prioritised over music festivals

kendalcalling.co.uk/There is a statement on Kendall Calling main page which explains where most festivals are, and have been placed in by this government. Guidlines from Gov will not be published till about 19/7 leaving local authorities to then implement the changes, with insurance cover this could have probably gone ahead, without its too much of a financial risk.

So Latitude is chosen for the Event Research Programme, and will defo go ahead. The festival is run by the same company that runs Download, which was also chosen for the ERP. It seems like it's a case of 'who you know' again. With any support or guidance from the government unlikely over the next few days, this kills off Womad, and probably many other festivals. The government are happy to prioritise high profile events such as Euro 2020, Wimbledon, Open Golf, and F1 at Silverstone, the latter with 160,000 people! I'm bloody annoyed.

I haven't looked at this for ages but wanted to find out what the feelings of this group were. I think it is significant that the events that are going ahead or have gained test status are sponsored by large organisations, not independents such as Womad. Latitude is also even more middle class than Womad and much more likely to attract Conservative voters!

Latitude is also even more middle class than Womad and much more likely to attract Conservative voters! Odd choice as Melvin who runs Latitude set up The socialist Beer Co. about 30 years ago. 'Test Status' if they were really doing this it would have been done in May at the early festivals so the ones from June onward could take place given good results. To make a huge festival a 'test' in late July is meaningless as festivals suddenly get the go ahead in August by which time most of not all will have been killed off.
They can say they did 'tests' 'to support the events industry'. YET AGAIN: TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.

This government have never had a handle on any aspect of this crisis , still floundering, i dont think there is a strategy for exiting this , could be another wave here in August mainly young people though. Most of Europe wants to ban entry of U.K citizens , which is quite fair really then the UK decides to add a load of Holiday isles on the green list Which of the above 2 scenarios is the safest one EUFA & FIFA Delegates get to come to UK unhindered , about 50,000 Indian citizens got to travel to UK in April , he knew about the varient very early in April
