Anyone else get this email?
While we are still buzzing from an utterly beautiful weekend at WOMAD Festival, our thoughts turn to the future... and we need your help!
We have a message from our founder Peter Gabriel to share with you all:
"Many of you will have seen one festival after another going out of business. We very much want WOMAD to survive and to flourish, and bring more of the world to the world. To do that well we really need your help and feedback - your attendance obviously determines whether we survive or not, and it would be brilliant if we could have some feedback from you about what is important, and unimportant, in what we do as we try to make WOMAD future proof.
For that reason, we are asking if you would be willing to give us a little time and a few answers to these questions."
Peter Gabriel
Please see the WOMAD survey linked below. We'd really appreciate your time and honest feedback, and we look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you, the WOMAD team

Fantastic photos. Is that Yungchen Lhamo's son cooking with her? I missed her gig due to volunteering duty, but saw her the previous weekend in Ireland.

He was in the background most of the time but she introduced him. To me her TTW show was too much talking and not enough music. Annie kept saying to her that she thought we’d like to hear her sing and eventually she gave in and did a few minutes but then back to the talk. I didn’t see her performance on stage - too late for me!

Anyone else get this email? No didn’t receive it, but did see some fake news that PG was in critical condition. If the email sent to Beef was genuine then Womad are worried, they need to be. Small festivals used to badly run and pretty poor in some cases. No longer, for me they are the future. For example just returned from our second year at Purbeck Valley Festival, very hilly but really good line up, bands not so loud I can’t hear them, we did complain toWomad about volume. A quiet campsite, with no extras add ons, and our field has flush toilets with basins and air driers and a covered wash up area with hot water., all for less than £40 day on an early bird. I spoke to a trader who bailed out of Womad after 15 years, noise and fees. The fact that they are holding this survey and the nature of the questions makes me think that they are worried that Womad no longer holds the magic that it once did. Difficult in this ever more globalised, algorithm-driven, drivel-filled fake environment, but I hope they can see beyond that trap, and conjure up the authentic Womad uniqueness again.

www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/aug/25/smaller-uk-music-festivals-struggle-to-be-heard-in-crowded-marketI guess this is partly why Womad is struggling - the whole sector is struggling, although the audiences do seem to be there. Also, it seems that "going to a festival" has become a fairly mainstream thing - it's lost its mystique and alternative otherness. I feel that the because of Womad's niche position, they can't compete with other festivals in the same way - and if they did, would probably water down Womad's unique appeal, which probably protects it to some extent.

I am not sure we should infer that Womad is struggling, I think there is a need to review and refresh what's on offer from time to time, and I am confident there will still be a great festival for many years to come.

Hello, I’m new to the forum - having left Facebook, I found the only thing I missed about social media was the WOMAD community group so hoping to join the WOMAD chat on here.
VERY late review of some of my highlights from this year:
4132314 - I really wanted to see both Ndox Electrique and this group and I struggled to decide which to go for. In the end I chose 4132314, with the plan that I’d head over to Charlie Gillet halfway through if I wasn’t sure about it. I’m so glad I chose them though as it was the highlight of the whole weekend for me! From the moment they started pulling wool through their instruments, I was mesmerised! An array of instruments all built into this huge table that they all stood around, with polyphonic singing, drumming that built up the rhythms in a hypnotic way. I think I didn’t stop smiling throughout the whole performance. At the end quite a few people just stayed in the tent - completely blown away. And when they came out to collect their strange assortment of instruments, they were met with huge cheers again!
Soema Montenegro - absolutely magical atmosphere at Ecotricity stage late night. She has an incredible voice, stage presence and the whole performance has the feeling of drama and mystery, with the addition of several upbeat songs to dance to at the end. One of her songs was so catchy that it kept me awake that night! I've been enjoying her album a lot of over the last month or so.
Did anyone else see these artists? I also really enjoyed Faiz Ali Faiz, Duo ruut, and Islandman.
re survey, I am a bit worried about the idea of Womad struggling - I thought some of the questions in the survey were troubling!

Hello Jessica, great to see someone new here! It's a bit quiet lately, but the only way to make it less quiet is for people to make some sort of noise. This place is meant to be an alternative to all the social media nonsense.... Anyway, I really enjoyed reading about your Womad highlights - sounds like I really missed something by not being there. l I used to go to Womad every year for about 25 years, and then life got more complicated after 2018. Still hopeful that the logistics will work out sometime soon. In the meantime, it's really nice to keep in touch with the festival by hearing from other folk. I agree, the survey was a bit troubling and difficult to answer in some ways.

Welcome to the forum Jessica! I saw the Spanish numbers group and agree they were one of the most intriguing acts this year, and definitely the most inventive. Please stick around, there's a core group of 10-15 on here, everyone has an interesting perspective:)

Hello beef and olirow, thank you for welcoming me to the forum! I'm looking forward to discussing all things Womad in the build up to 2025's festival!
Beef - Sorry to hear you haven't been able to attend Womad recently. I hope next you're able to go again soon! What would you say was your highlight from the 25 years you attended for?
Olirow - glad to hear you also enjoyed the Spanish numbers group! I was worried that the audience was a little small to begin with but I think it built throughout (it was hard to tell after a while as I was quite near the front). I rarely saw the Siam full during this year's Womad, which I thought was unusual!
