Mr/Ms/Mrs/ Goat
this thread is meant to be for feedback about this year womad, please do so constructively and try to avoid sweeping negative statements biased on your personal political options as these simply come across as attempts to angry or upset other posters

So, CurryGoat, your answer is to blame and insult the people that do attend WOMAD for being too open, friendly, and embracing science. From here on, I will not feed a troll. Of course that is not what I said and you know it. If anyone is a troll, missus, you are. It is very clear I am suggesting attendance has dropped because Womad has become too Guardian-reader friendly. The Guardian is overwhelmingly read by authoritarian, corporate socialists and there are a lot more non-Guardian readers who are open, friendly and embrace science who would come if it wasn't for Womad's Guardian-reader image. CurryGoat, I can very well read what you said and your largest complaint seems to be what newspaper WOMAD goers may prefer to read. I'm going to guess it was this article in the Guardian quoting WOMAD's founder Peter Gabriel that has sent you into a tiff. womad.co.uk/do-we-really-want-a-white-breaded-brexited-flatland/ I never went to a festival thinking I'm going because they read the same newspaper I do.
If you have gone to many WOMADs you should have known this one would have diversity and a focus on science as a defining theme.
Given the weather, attendance was actually pretty good. I believe somewhere around 30,000+ daily, maybe a little lower on Thursday, which is not unusual for festivals that run into the week. Which gives credence that many people just didn't camp this year and used other options. I'm thinking they came and went, so giving an illusion of less people. Those with children came earlier and left earlier, those without kids, came later and stayed later. Perhaps some came early, went back to town to cool or dry off, returning again later. In that, might be better for the local businesses picking up increased lunch and dinner patrons. I don't know for sure, but are reasonable assumptions given the numbers.
Beyond criticizing what people may or may not read and what they have said here CG, you offer nothing to what worked and didn't work. Dissing a particular newspaper, and likely the founder and often benefactor of WOMAD, and the members of this forum, does not make for constructive criticism.
Otherwise, your "I know you are, but what am I?" arguments, and dog whistles are extremely trollish behavior. You seem more upset that most of the WOMAD attenders weren't 'your' kind of people. To that, perhaps instead of trying to make WOMAD and WOMADers conform to your ideals, it may be time for you to move on and find a festival that works better for you. After all, if your argument is WOMAD should be more like another festival, perhaps that's the festival you should attend.

Just wondering how popular “Rees-Mogg for PM” stickers will be next year 😉😉😉 How about "Bollocks to Guardian readers" that's catchy 😀 If you can do a few for The Sun then I might take one, cheers. Haha, that's great. Womad could introduce a "Bollocks to Guardian readers" stage in the World of Words. GUARDIAN READERS, STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO

I am pretty sure Currygoat occasionally posted on the old forum, and has always had an interesting and independent point of view. I hope that continues. It can feel very cliquey on here, and different views make it more interesting. I don't read the Guardian, but the possibility that a socialist ethic is damaging the festival is an interesting point of view, and no need for anyone to get defensive. I think it is bollocks personally, but still quite thought provoking. CG, is there a 'label' you'd put on yourself?

I think Currygoat is talking bollocks about Guardian readers but It's always good to hear different views even if we don't all agree. Getting back to the subject of feedback, I know there is no chance of this but I wouldn't mind seeing la di dah loos go, treat everyone equal and the pampering spa seems a bit over the top.

Back to more concrete festival feedback:
The timetable - I know WOMAD are keen to push their app, but for those of us old codgers that prefer a paper timetable to do our preparation, this did appear on the website but not where it was last year and with no publicity. It would be useful to know when and where it's available.
T-shirts - I assume this was subcontracted, but this year the largest size was "Large". I'm sure I wasn't the only one that couldn't fit comfortably into this. A shame - I thought it was a good shirt this year.
This year I had to leave early so this is a point from previous years that I suspect still applied. Not eveyone can leave first thing on Monday, as car park queues demonstrate. Those who leave later generally find that with the loos no longer being serviced, the final visit is one that I for one would rather forget. It would be nice if a basic level was maintained until a reasonable hour (And apologies if this was addressed this year).
Other than that, it was the usual brilliant experience of course.

A few thoughts... I may add more later if I think of anything
WaterAs has been discussed, there were plenty of free water taps around the arena. They were in all the usual places that they have been for the past few years. However, it is clear from come comments that they were not necessarily easy to spot - I found them easily because I knew they existed and where they would be, but others weren't finding them and that really is a problem, especially on the Thursday & Friday when it was really hot. I think the problem here is that they were next to the Womad Water taps, so if you saw a "Water Point" sign off in the distance, you might head towards it, see the Womad Water tap and not realise that there was a free water tap next to it. Perhaps next year they should put a clear and prominent sign over any water taps that are next to the Womad Water taps saying "Free Drinking Water", or even not putting the Womad Water taps out, leave the marked water points as free taps only and dish out the fancy Womad Water at the stalls only. On the subject of water, it was nice to see this year more and more punters walking around with metal flasks instead of plastic bottles. It would be nice if the artists weren't supplied with crates of plastic water bottles though, although I appreciate there are some logistics hurdles to leap on this. LoosGenerally seemed ok. They weren't as well attended to as they have been in the past though. Quite often they would be out of hand sanitiser. Shame not to see the panel of hand sanitiser pumps at each block of loos as in previous years. Good to see urinals being used again, although they could make it more obvious that they existed, I didn't realise until probably late on Friday or sometime on Saturday. As ever, it would be nice if they kept up the maintenance of the loos on Monday morning to give us a slightly more cheery start to leaving day Line-UpLots of amazing music as always. I don't think I really had any downtime, and as ever it was hard to work out when to stop for food / beer. But it would be nice to have just one or two more "name" acts. That might draw a few more people in, and it also would mean when I repeatedly get asked by friends & family "Who's playing?" I can say more than "Erm.... er... Leftfield?" SecurityGood friendly people doing security. Had some nice chats with the some of the guys doing security in front of the stages while waiting for music to start and it sounds like they enjoy doing Womad. The security guys at wristband checkpoints though... some of them didn't seem to be bothered about actually checking people's wristbands on the way in. This could become a problem if people can just walk in without being checked, event licences can potentially be at risk if this isn't taken seriously enough. BarsGreat, friendly helpful people working on the bars. And I didn't have to wait long to get served either. But it would be nice if they had some real ale at the other bars like the Fast-Serve and Cider bars. The location of the Real Ale bar meant we had to walk all the way to the very edge of the arena to get a pint. Saying that, I never did try the Golden Lion, so maybe that would have been an option? Apart from Thurday evening obviously when it was A Pub With No Beer! All in all a very enjoyable time. I look forward to next year as always!

OK, looks like we do need to move some of the conversation to the Chunter thread. I bumped it up yesterday to make it easier to find.

Don't Panic. I deleted no posts, but took some initiative and moved a bit of the side conversation to the Chunter thread. Yes, I even moved at one of my posts. Sorry for any inconvenience, I'm not terribly anal about threads getting off track, but this was getting a bit out of hand. So, if someone wants to cry about it, please go here: fullmoonpub.proboards.com/thread/137/chunter-womad?page=74

Just wondering how popular “Rees-Mogg for PM” stickers will be next year 😉😉😉 I'll have one for my hat. He is living proof that some politicians run around in such rarified air that they actually believe that God is telling them how much air the rest of us are allowed to breathe. It is not his fault either, no doubt this ethos was beaten into him when he was fag at school. (non UK folks - Fag- a junior pupil at a public school who does minor chores for a senior pupil. "a fag at school who has suffered a well-earned beating") Seriously, you come to Womad to escape the world for a few days, 360 other days to save the world and do politics. I don't want to see political stickers, or save the whales on the melting ice cap as they drown in rising sea levels containing dead polar bears, in a plastic sea of waste, so hot from global warming that it creates storms that drive wind turbines to power our electric cars. If I want all that I have Facebook.

So in essence, aside from the blind spot of no loo clearance on a Monday pretty much physically it all worked.
For me the food traders have priced them selves out of the market and one or 2 have gone. The arboretum was too full, and Ecocity too crowded. La de La loos waste of money except Womad must get a % and it takes load off the others, so carry on! Bring back fancy dress- see the other or an earlier post on this. Traders highlight for me and Rachel as well - Tiny Tea Tent and Nick Hopper Design tea shirts stall - no XL Womad ones to compete with! We take for granted Womad is so clean- so thanks to all the cleaners. The flat site is a bonus too, others are not, cars on grass not stubble- makes such a difference in the wet. Finally, a town that loves and supports the festival, basically nice locals.
