Going to see Mavis Staples at the Chicago Symphony Center in February. She's going to be in the UK in July. If you've never seen her I recommend. Then again, she has been at WOMAD before, so perhaps some of you have already seen her. She does have a new album, so with the classics there will be new works to hear. Who knows, maybe she'll make a return to WOMAD before returning to The States?

It's not very world music and to be honest they weren't very good (not helped by the fact that I failed to recognise any of their songs) but I saw the Editors last night, with support band the KVB, a sort of weird 1980's throwback band.
It was all pretty average to be honest BUT ...it was in the Cambridge Corn Exchange. This is the first venue I ever went to, still a snotty nosed school kid, seeing bands like Stiff Little Fingers in the late 1970's. The atmosphere was electric those days, it literally crackled, and if you went to the front you were guaranteed to be crushed and end the night drenched in sweat.I shook Beki Bondage's hand at one gig, so memorable that errm I remember it over 40 years later. That place holds such special emotions for me, I have never been back until last night, and it was like coming home.

For the first time in a very long time we thought we wouldn't see any Celtic Connection show however the late addition of the RSC orchestra preforming Grit by Martyn Bennet was too good to ignore.
We also bough tickets for Glasgow Film festival however Del has 3 gigs that clash with the festival which made picking the films to see harder than normal

One of the problems of going to gigs at the last minute is that occasionally the necessary research is a bit lacking. So I saw Aoife O'Donovan last night on the strength of the gig being listed in the thankfully restored Songlines Gig Guide, it being at Kings Place which is a lovely venue for a low key folk gig, and her having a name which sounds so like an Irish folk singer that she must actually be an Irish folk singer, right? Wrong. She is an American singer of Americana music, and definitely a lot closer to country than folk. The supporting duo, Violet Bell, even more so. Plus I had failed to spot that this was a special gig where Aoife would sing the entirety of Bruce Springsteen's album Nebraska. Sorry I am not a big fan of Bruce, he's like a grown up Ed Sheeran.
So I guess the moral of the tale is always read the label before purchasing.
All that being said, the gig itself was fine and probably a good example of that type of music. I may not see her again though.

That's a great review olirow. Kind of reminds me of the time I found myself to be the only male at a gig in a north London pub by the country/rockabilly band Well Oiled Sisters...it was only then that I realised the obvious.. they were a lesbian band with a hardcore following... next time I saw them was worse.. more than 25 years later at Womad 2018 when someone fell on my foot, falling from a table and then within seconds getting my glasses smashed at Molly's bar... spent more time looking for my glasses on the ground than watching the band... and 5 years later I don't think my big toe nail will ever be the same again... will I never learn? Well, I treasure that moment of realisation at the pub gig... and I think I will give people dancing on tables a wide berth... so maybe.

Well if it’s confessions of turning up and realising the crowd was not the crowd for you, I have 4,
When I was young (very young) I was a big fan of Motörhead, saw them twice at our local college gigs had a drink and a chat at the bar with Lemmy, great band, then went to see they’re first gig at the Hammy Odeon. The crowd though was shameful booing off the legendary Johnny Moped I felt ashamed to be in that crowd. I never bought a Motörhead album after that, but did buy Johnny Moped’s in solidarity 👍
Same thing happened at a Blue Oyster Cult gig with the support band Japan, luckily Japan didn’t leave and completed their set. I was so impressed I bought the Japan album, but never bought Blue Oyster Cult.
Then turning up to see Paul Young, he’s brilliant but sitting with 8,000 screaming 13 year old girls I’d definitely made a mistake 😂😂😂😂😂
Clearly I don’t learn quickly, went to see Bananarama (they’re fun and interesting) again an audience of 13 year old girls only now seemed to be armed with whistles to blow constantly through the gig. 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

Those are nice stories beef and sc:) Well perhaps nice isn't the right word, beef given what happened to your foot...
Things would be dull if they always went to plan, and it's often the things that didn't quite work that we like to remember.

I am sure that I have been in the same situation a few times but cannot recall any details. However, I do remember a Guardian review of Paul Young in concert a number of years back where ‘7,999 eager girls were listening intently to each crafted song performed by Paul, only to be spoiled by the manic high pitch screeching of a middle aged punter who had previously had his whistle confiscated by stewards during the support act’.

Vieux Farka Touré tonight at the Button Factory, Dublin. Sadly that didn't go ahead. Visa problems. Such a shame that African artists keep coming up against this.... New date 9 June.
