I am seeing Brighde Chaimbeul too, this weekend. Bring on the bagpipes!
She's in the lineup of the Hidden Notes festival which is on in Stroud this weekend. It's an opportunity to hear some stuff which is a little different. The only other artist I'm familiar with is Hannah Peel, who performed at Womad a few years ago.
View AttachmentI have one of Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres' albums. Nice stuff! No bagpipes though

Del had a double header at the weekend, The hot damn in support of the Black Spiders and Hayseed Dixie.
The Hot damn were okay but Del's mates didn't fancy the Black Spiders so they left early for the pub.
Hayseed Dixie were on top form, after the show Del manage a quick hello with the band and discovered they in talks with Celtic Connections about a special show in 2025.

I think I have said before that it's rarely a good idea to decide to go to a gig last minute, and I remembered why last night. Congo Natty was playing at the Forum in Tunbridge Wells, I didn't think I could make it so hadn't given it any attention but then things changed so I thought why not? The schedule at the Forum is always support act on around 8pm, headliner on at 9pm, it ends at 10.30pm and I am in bed by 11pm. Not this time. I had failed to notice that it was a Club Night, and this means closing at 1am. Which is all well and good if the headliner sticks to a 9pm start, and then a DJ takes over to the end. But they did it the other way round, there was incessant monotonous and extremely loud jungle music from 8pm onwards, and by the time Congo Natty started at 11.30pm, I had lost the will to live. Plus they then had 'technical issues', and chaos and confusion reigned. I stuck it until midnight and then quit. I love live music, and the fact that there is a really good venue so close to home, but that was a really bad night, possibly the worst experience at a gig ever.

Brilliant gig last night, we trundled over to Stowmarket and the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, a lovely small and intimate venue, to see LYR, Simon Armitage, yes the Poet Lauteate's band. Lovely and beautiful gig of Spoken Word, by Simon. Nice

I think heading over to Stowmarket might have been the better option:)

Went to Peter's concert in Chicago Saturday night and it was a brilliant show. Full of energy, I danced so much I'm still exhausted. It was a good crowd, with the United Center filled to the rafters. If there were any empty seats, they were few. The blend of old songs with the new album worked well. If anyone was there, I was the one that blurted out Big Time when Peter asked what time it was. Glad I got it right, felt a little weird I might have been the only one to say it out loud, and may have faltered a little with the word Time, because of it. Peter smiled and pointed in my general direction, before bursting out in the song Big Time! so OK then. My camera on my phone isn't the best, but may have gotten a few decent pictures. I didn't take too many, as it distracts from being in the moment. Have to say, I love the concert versions of the new songs the best so far. I think broken down to fewer musicians really worked better for them, than the studio versions. Sadly, I didn't run into, or perhaps we didn't recognize each other, any of the former Peter Gabriel forum members. I am a bit chubbier than they would remember me to be. I also have a feeling they may be going to tonight's show in Milwaukee. Oh well, I get another chance to run into them at Steve Hackett's Copernicus show in Chicago next month. Oh, and Disney Plus is going to live stream the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on November 3rd. It will be available for reviewing after that. Much as it might be more fun to be there, it will be nice to be able to watch from the comfort of my own home, and far less expensive.

If I'd been there (and said anything) it would probably have been something like "quarter to 10"...

I would probably have shouted ‘chico time’ and end up having to be escorted out by security (for my own safety)

On Friday night I am going to see Natalie Merchant at the London Palladium.
Now, I know she is not everyone's cup of tea but there was a time when I simply adored her. For about two years, hers was the only music that I listened to, and pretty continuously at that. I thought she was stunningly beautiful, and her music magical. I loved her when she played as a 17 year old in 10000 Maniacs, and even more when she played at Bill Clinton's inauguration. She was so in love with Michael Stipe, you could see the happiness ooze out of her.
Then I met her at a signing in New York, and saw her play at the Barbican, and neither were the wonderful experience I had expected, and the spell was broken.
I still enjoy her music, but I haven't even listened to her latest album. I only found out about the concert by accident, still I am really looking forward to it.
She introduced me to the music of the Innocence Mission, through her collaboration with Karen Peris, on Golden Bells, and I still love her for that. And the song Planned Obsolescence is still perhaps my favourite of all time, the good citizens of Tunbridge Wells will often hear me singing it.

Nice back story olirow - hope it's a great gig - I didn't keep up but I did love Blind Man's Zoo. But did almost spit my tea out when I misread (without wearing my glasses) Karen Peris...

By a happy coincidence, I am in Hue in Vietnam at the same time as the first two days of the Hue International Music Festival. So that means I will be able to see Rori from Belgium and Youngjoo Song from South Korea. Well hopefully anyway, there was some live music in downtown Hanoi a few days ago, and there were so many people I couldn't see anything, and actually couldn't move for a while, genuine crush risk and quite scary. I will be sure to let you know how it goes:) Edit: Hmm, the jazz singer from South Korea didn't show and the pop singer from Belgium was pretty dull. Good sound and production though. Not particularly well attended, perhaps not surprising given the obscure performers. Here are some pictures... Attachments:

Lovely evening last Friday up the Roundhouse with friends for the Simon Emmerson memorial gig, Imagined Village, Afro Celt Sound System, Billy Bragg, Martin and Eliza Carthy, Working Week, Snowboy, Gilles Peterson, The Copper Family, DJ Chris Tofu
Fabulous venue, amazed that somehow I'd never before managed to see a gig at the Roundhouse before!
Sadly we left early (A bit after 10) as my arthritic knees were playing merry hell. But I think we only missed The Copper Family, Snowboy and DJ Chris Tofu. Lovely gig, fantastic venue, sadly only about half full
