Can you point me in the direction of the show Mikey - looked at her recent shows on BBC Sounds and don't see Dakhbrakha listed...? All I can find is what was broadcast live right at the end of Cerys Matthews’ show on Sunday. Perhaps was expecting too much to think there might have been any more made available 🙁 oh well... of all the endless online nonsense 'available' it's always the thing you actually want to see/hear that is not available... thanks Mikey.

Despite it literally being next door to where I live I gave Tunbridge Wells' Pub in the Park a miss today. They had Aswad playing. I used to love Aswad. And I have never seen them.
I didn't go because...
- wtf are Aswad doing playing at a posh foodie festival on a lazy Sunday afternoon in Tunbridge Wells? That is just wrong on every level.
- it was far too effing hot.
The latter may have been the more important of the two reasons.
However, my wife is in Spain for a week so I have the chance to see a few gigs. Starting tonight at Brixton Academy with Peter Hook for a celebration of Joy Division. Never seen so many people wear the squiggly t-shirt. I think the last time I was here was seeing the Ramones in the early 80's. Is that even possible? My wife went with me, she fell asleep at the back of the hall. I should have known we'd always have different views on music. I thought I would convert her. That didn't happen.
Edit: Peter Hook is no Ian Curtis but many Joy Division songs still cut me in two. Draining.

I had intended going to see Fat Freddies Drop at Manchester Academy a couple of days before Womad but the thought of catching a dose of covid and testing positive would mean missing Womad. After waiting three years since the last one I thought that too big a risk. There’s lots of it about.

Yes the thought of getting Covid was a worry for me going to see The Imagined Village in Bridport the week before Womad. I don't have to worry because I thought, like most people here who haven't had Covid yet, I was starting to think I was immune- wrong!! I got it on the 26 June it took 10 days to clear and like most people who have had it its a longer recovery.
So yendor is right, protect yourself s if you want to go to Womad. The virus is a thug.

So yendor is right, protect yourself s if you want to go to Womad. The virus is a thug. I did go to Taste Of Westmont for their annual Blues Jam and Muddy Waters Tribute, hosted by Mike Wheeler. The music was great as always. Not as crowded as you'd like to see it, with Covid not necessarily a bad thing, but not a bad sized crowd. As for not doing any crowd kind of things before WOMAD, my feelings exactly. Much as I usually like to go to the little blues fest one of the local bars puts on during Catfish Days, I'm not likely to go this year, because it's the day before my flight. The stage is in a tent without sides, but tends to be quite crowded. The outside area, also tends to be very crowed. I did go last year, but we didn't have the latest Covid variant running around and it was a low time for Covid. It does seem countries are reluctant to shut anything down again. So, here's hoping we can all avoid Covid. In the meantime, if you are eligible and haven't already done, so get your boosters. Even if they are not as effective on the newer variants, they seem to still be effective in preventing serious illness. Definitely, worth a sore arm and a little fatigue for a few days.

I am seeing ZRI at Dalston Curve Garden tonight. They examine the interface between Brahms/Schubert and folk music apparently, which sounded intriguing enough for me to want to check it out.
Trouble is, and the clue is in the name I guess, that the Curve Garden is an actual garden and therefore the music is outside. It's just started to rain and the midges have started to bite. Good prep for WOMAD I guess (although tbf I don't recall ever getting bitten at WOMAD)...

Last night I went to see Bloodywood - nu-metal mixed with Punjabi folk and bhangra with radical political messages. Definitely the hottest gig I've ever been to, and my ears are still ringing, what an amazing gig. I would absolutely love to see them at WOMAD - I reckon they fit the bill, and I'd love to see how a WOMAD crowd reacts to proper metal. I can't recall any metal bands playing before?
Check it out:

Just got a ticket for DakhaBrakha in Bristol on Sunday night. Looks like they are at London and Bristol only before heading off to America.

A couple of last minute gig tickets for me... Bought a ticket earlier this week to see Courtney Pine at Sunny Buxton Opera House tonight, and bought another a couple of days ago to see Agnes Obel at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester tomorrow night!

Not my next gig, as it's not until June next year. Been checking out the Bonnaroo Website. Not nearly as great as WOMAD, but looks like it could be fun. Instead of an 8 hour flight, plus some driving, it's an 8 hour or so drive, but still tempting. Especially, if I can get my truck and camper functional. It runs Thursday thru Friday, but allow campers to show up on Tuesday or Wednesday. Have to pick the day your are arriving when you buy the tickets. I'm thinking it would be nice to show up Wednesday afternoon. www.bonnaroo.com/Besides similar camping opportunities, they also have shuttles running from Nashville Fairgrounds and some hotels. There are even some airport shuttles, definitely read about times and such before doing so. Figure even if not leaving for home Monday, one could take the airport shuttle to the airport then a hotel shuttle or pick up a car. They are a lot more restrictive of what you can bring into the main venue, meaning hip flasks are likely a no go.

DakhBrakha were amazing last night in Bristol, better than seeing them at WOMAD as they were able to play for much longer than the allocated 1hour and (sadly) there was much more energy because of the war and that they are representing the real heroes back in Ukraine. Good to see lots of Ukrainians (or assume from Ukraine due to the language being spoken in the crowd and the wonderful embroidered shirts being worn). At times it was really emotional but also uplifting and sharing an important message about the fight for freedom. Looks like they are now off to the America, playing as ‘ambassadors’ for Ukraine and raising funds. If anyone happens to be in the US and want to know where www.dakhabrakha.com.ua/en/dates/Hopefully they will be coming back to the UK soon, although shows may be arranged with little notice (as it was with Bristol) so worth keeping a lookout on their website. I also wonder if they will be in the country during the run up (including an appearance) to Eurovision in May. After all, what better musical ambassadors can there be.
