Jealous of CalnDel seeing dakhabrakha again. Tried to get tickets for myself and my Niece to see them in a smaller venue in Bristol but sadly left it too late and no success going on the waiting list (normally a good thing to do rather than give up completely). As Lankum at the newly refurbished Bristol Beacon. Fantastic Irish folk who would be good at Womad. The Beacon (let’s forget the old name, shall we 😁) is fantastic, nice big venue with amazing sound . View AttachmentYou have to be quick to get a ticket for Dakhabraka when they play the lanes, we managed it a few years ago and ended getting an invite to Kyiv, but that's another story

The Breath were great, the only played for an hour as Ríoghnach was unwell. We managed to have a good chat with the band after the show and Stuart let slip they have been booked play WOMAD! we both agreed they would sound amazing in the BnQ stage
Fatoumata Diawara on top form and grabbed the celtic connection crowd by the scruff of the neck and made them dance like loons. Her guitar playing was fantastic but I can help but wonder why it doesn't feature more on her recordings.

Go Maidstone!
Went to see DeFuego at the Green Note a few days ago. Was expecting high quality Spanish guitar. Didn't really get that. They are a duo, she is Hungarian, he is supposedly Spanish but must have been in the UK for a long time. The music was Spanish influenced, and not particularly well delivered. Their big influence is Rodrigo y Gabriella, they have a long way to go. Plus it was just in the Green Note basement, I didn't even know it had one. Which is all a bit too negative, some of their own compositions were pretty good, and it was nice just being there, haven't gone to a gig for quite a while.

Saw Nadine Shah in Bristol last night, new record launch at Bristol Rough Trade. Great show, new album is pretty good and she is such a nice, down to earth person when you meet her.
On Thursday we have a local night of poetry and music celebrating the river Wye, just hope the Water Companies stop sewage discharge, farms clean up and Planning Authorities put river protection at the heart of all future developments, otherwise it will become a requiem to a beautiful valley that has been slowly dying over the last few years. Have seen it change so much over a short time, just ten years ago we canoed the whole navigational length (over four years) when it was full of life, but now…
Friday, a return to Rough Trade.with the fantastic Yard Act launching their new album

I know that's football, but sorry about that sc. Absolutely nothing to be sorry about Beef, Maidstone had an completely awesome run, absolute hero's! First time since 1977/78 that such a lowly ranked (6th teir) team made it so far. It was only a matter of time before one of the massive clubs knocked us out, we just being a small part-time team (many of Maidstone playèrs have proper jobs too) against a team whose players cost millions. It was just a shame it wasn't one of the obscenely rich celebrity clubs, it would have been great to be able to say "It took England's elite to make Maidstone kneel" The club, the players, George the manager, the supporters all gave Maidstone, the little people and underdogs around the World, belief and hope. They shone a light into a dark dark world, they carved their names into the history books. Sadly, I missed the game on Monday due to being poorly, but joyfully watched it on TV with a mug of tea.

Seeing BCUC in Cardiff tonight. After their incredible Womad show (plus an amazing picture with Del at the front), saw them a month later at Green Man. Hopefully, their performance will be just as intense tonight in a smaller setting.

Just got back from my 1st gig in 5 years... Johnny Dowd... which was great. Look up Johnny on YouTube if you want to know what I mean by great. But before the gig started the promoter referred to the death a couple of days ago of Karl Wallinger... of World Party and Big Blue Ball/Realworld recording week fame... was a bit of a shocking and sad thing to hear. I've heard too much shocking and sad stuff in recent weeks and months (years... that's another thing). The flimsy line between existing and stone cold mortality is getting me down. www.theguardian.com/music/2024/mar/13/karl-wallinger-obituary

It's great that you got to the gig Beef, I don't know much about your personal circumstances but if you got to that gig, hopefully you can get to others... and perhaps to Womad too?
My last gig was seeing Big Country and the Icicle Works at Cambridge Junction a few nights back. A great chance to catch two bands that I was vaguely fond of back in the day, and had not seen before. There were just two from IW playing, quite enjoyable set although I didn't recognise any of their songs at all! Then Big Country, who I always think of as an offshoot of the Skids, despite the fact that Stuart Adamson, the only person linking the bands, died in 2001. They only really have one song (in other words all their songs sound the same to me, which undoubtedly says more about me than them) but it's quite a good one, so I quite enjoyed them too. It was a remarkably subdued audience though, and I think that might be a feature of many post Covid gigs, like the experience is still weighing people down.

Then Big Country, who I always think of as an offshoot of the Skids, despite the fact that Stuart Adamson, the only person linking the bands, died in 2001. The amazing Stuart Adamson. His son (Callum) played for a while in the band ahab (not the German death metal band!) and thought they were incredible. On the proverbial cusp and then sadly split up, not sure but wonder if the costs of keeping the band going outweighed the income from ticket and album sales.
